Health Benefits of Honey Honey is a sweet, sticky, and sumptuous food that can be consumed alone or as an additive, sweetener or topping for other foods. Bees produce honey as their main food source. By collecting sugar rich flower nectar bees can create honey through a long refining and regurgitation process. Honey is stored within the honeycombs to be used during cold seasons or scarcity. Beekeepers develop hives that allow the bees to overproduce honey, which allows the beekeepers to remove the excess for human consumption. Honey is available in several different flavors depending upon the nectar source. Although, the original discovery of honey is unknown, the use of honey by humans dates back over 10000 years ago. As a food source honey is mainly made up of fructose and glucose, both of which are easily used and broken down by the body. For the last 3,000 years honey has been used in medicinal treatments, treating ailments and maintaining a healthy body.
Kombucha Withdrawn From Stores Food Safety Published on July 19th, 2010 | by Rachel Shulman I’ve always been a fan of kombucha, the fermented tea touted for its health benefits. But the buzz I would get from store-bought kombucha always made me feel like a light-weight. Well, apparently I had no reason to feel embarrassed by my reaction to kombucha. Kombucha makers insist that the tea leaves production with only a trace amount of alcohol. Interestingly, the removal of raw kombucha from Whole Foods and other stores has been linked to tabloid star Lindsay Lohan, after rumors surfaced that kombucha set off Lohan’s alcohol monitoring bracelet. The government is currently testing samples of unpasteurized kombucha to determine how it should be labeled. If you’re missing your kombucha, you can still find pasteurized versions of the beverage in stores. Images courtesy of saeru via a Creative Commons license. Healing the Body with Mindfulness of Breathing « Metta Refuge This excerpt from a talk by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh explains how to use mindfulness of breathing to bring loving-kindness to our dear bodies. The physical effect of this can be truly remarkable. As Thây says, “You should really love your body. You should really take care of your body. Mindful breathing, with rest, can do miracles The First Exercise of Mindful Breathing My dear friends, yesterday I spoke about the first exercise proposed by the Buddha concerning mindful breathing: “Breathing in, I am aware that I am breathing in; breathing out, I am aware that I am breathing out.” We should always start with our physical bodies, because our physical bodies also needs peace, harmony and rest. We should realize a true rest. Animals in the forest, every time they are wounded, know how to rest. Deep relaxation here is one of the methods of resting. The Second Exercise of Mindful Breathing Do not try to prolong the breath; just allow it to be the way it is, naturally. Like this:

The knowledge that cranberries fight the bacteria causing these infections comes in handy, especially as the overuse of prescription antibiotics forces new strains of drug-resistant bacteria to evolve. Although scientists are still not exactly sure how the fruit juice functions as a natural antibiotic, a new study has provided a bit more insight. If not for these fimbriae, the flow of urine would simply wash the bacteria away. Bacterial cells can double within the hour, said Dr. The medicinal characteristics of cranberries have been recorded as early as 1620. It wasn't until the 1980s that researchers realized the cranberry-induced acidity wasn't strong enough to kill the E. coli, Camesano said. Camesano's work shows that cranberry juice blocks the E. coli fimbriae from grabbing onto urinary tract cells. Unanswered questions Got a question?

Kombucha Kombucha including the culture Etymology[edit] In Japan Konbucha (昆布茶?, "kelp tea") stands for a different beverage made from dried and powdered kombu (an edible kelp from the Laminariaceae family).[2] For the English word kombucha, first recorded in 1995 and of uncertain etymology,[3] the American Heritage Dictionary suggests: "Probably from Japanese kombucha, tea made from kombu (the Japanese word for kelp perhaps being used by English speakers to designate fermented tea due to confusion or because the thick gelatinous film produced by the kombucha culture was thought to resemble seaweed)."[4] The proper Japanese name for what English speakers know as kombucha is kōcha kinoko 紅茶キノコ (literally, 'red tea mushroom'), compounding kōcha "black tea" and kinoko 茸 "mushroom; toadstool". A 1965 mycological study called kombucha "tea fungus" and listed other names: "teeschwamm, Japanese or Indonesian tea fungus, kombucha, wunderpilz, hongo, cajnij, fungus japonicus, and teekwass History[edit]
Mysterious Honey Discovered That Kills All Bacteria Scientists Throw At It Wiki Image John StapletonThe Australian Australian researchers have been astonished to discover a cure-all right under their noses — a honey sold in health food shops as a natural medicine. Far from being an obscure health food with dubious healing qualities, new research has shown the honey kills every type of bacteria scientists have thrown at it, including the antibiotic-resistant “superbugs” plaguing hospitals and killing patients around the world. Some bacteria have become resistant to every commonly prescribed antibacterial drug. It is applied externally and acts on skin infections, bites and cuts. The honey is distinctive in that it comes only from bees feeding off tea trees native to Australia and New Zealand, said Dee Carter, from the University of Sydney’s School of Molecular and Microbial Biosciences. The findings are likely to have a major impact on modern medicine and could lead to a range of honey-based products to replace antibiotic and antiseptic creams. Article Source
