Last year, a paper published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) suggested that people who used cannabis heavily as teenagers saw their IQs fall by middle age. But a study published today — also in PNAS — says that factors unrelated to cannabis use are to blame for the effect. Nature explores the competing claims. What other factors might cause the decline in IQ? Is this a case of correlation versus causation? Past research on the Dunedin cohort shows that individuals from backgrounds with low socioeconomic status are more likely than others to begin smoking cannabis during adolescence, and are more likely to progress from use to dependence. According to Røgeberg, people with low socioeconomic status are, on average, likely to show declining IQ as they age and gradually self-select or are sorted into less cognitively demanding arenas. Do other studies show a drop in IQ with cannabis use? So who is right?
There are many correct ways to answer a test question From Mycoted R.L. Loeffelbein, a physics teacher at Washington University in St. The examination problem was: "Show how it is possible to determine the height of a tall building with the aid of a barometer." The student's answer was, "Take the barometer to the top of the building, attach a long rope to it, and lower the barometer to the ground. I, as arbiter, pointed out that the student really had a strong case for full credit since he had answered the problem completely and correctly. He was given six minutes to answer it, with the warning this time that the answer should indicate some knowledge of physics. At this point, I asked my colleague if he gave up and he conceded. Recalling that the student had said he had other answers, I asked him what they were. "Of course, if you want a more sophisticated method, you can tie the barometer to the end of a string, swing it as a pendulum, and determine the value of 'g.' R.L.

By Pamela Costello, St. Paul, Minnesota Introduction The incredible, custom-fit raglan is a sweater knit from the neck down in a single piece on circular needles, and it can be made to fit any size from infant to adult. This form of raglan sweater is not my original idea. This worksheet will take you through the steps required to design and knit the custom-fit raglan. It is impossible to calculate in advance the exact amount of yarn needed. This chart also gives approximations of the raglan measurements for each standard size. Measurements The following measurements are needed: Neck-size:_______ (measure snugly around the neck, or use an appropriate man's collar size) Casting on
Science Says: Lungs Love Weed | TakePart - News, Culture, Videos and Photos That Make the World Better Breathe easy, tokers. Smoking marijuana in moderate amounts may not be so bad for your lungs, after all. A new study, published in this month's Journal of the American Medical Association, tested the lung function of over 5,000 young adults between 18 and 30 to determine marijuana's effect on lungs. In fact, researchers were surprised to find marijuana smokers performed slightly better than both smokers and non-smokers on the lung performance test. MORE: 5 Reasons Not to Smoke Synthetic Weed For most of human existence, cannabis has been considered a medicine. "What's interesting is if you look at origins of the marijuana prohibition in this country, it coincides with a rise in anti-immigrant sentiment. . . really since the early years of this century, the war on marijuana has been much more a war on the sort of people who smoke it, be they Mexicans or blacks or jazz musicians or beatniks or hippies or hip-hop artists. Attitudes are changing, however.
Welcome to Neauveau Fiber Arts: How to Unravel a Sweater to Recycle Yarn This is the sweater we will be unraveling. Turn your sweater inside-out, grab a pair of sharp scissors and let's get started! There are good seams and bad seams. This is an example of a good seam. It looks like two tiny braids side-by-side. Newbie unravelers will want to cut the thread one bit at a time, which is fine. I've cut the seam from the bottom of the sweater to the end of the sleeve. At the top of the sleeve are little loops! FLASH FORWARD: See the pile of yarn ramen in this photo? When you unravel a sweater that is made of many colors, you will usually find a knot where the two colors meet. Here is the collar and shoulder seams of the sweater, still waiting to be unraveled. This is what a bad seam looks like. On a whim I pull the little thread. But what do we do about the bad seam on each shoulder? Here is the skein-measuring thing (I call it a "ghetto-knoddy" - a ghetto version of a niddy noddy you can buy online. Tips for specific yarns
