Teaching Adverbial and Adjective Clauses When teaching adverbial and adjective clauses to students, it is important to demonstrate how these types of clauses differ. While they are both dependent clauses that cannot stand on their own and thus require another independent clause to create a grammatical sentence, adverbial clauses and adjective clauses perform two distinct functions in sentences. Adverbial Clauses Adverbial clauses are dependent clauses that modify verbs and verb phrases. Adverbial clauses answer questions about the verb phrase that relate to time, location, purpose, and condition. When teaching students to identify adverbial clauses, you should ask them to consider what kinds of questions the clause answers. The hostess wouldn't seat us because the restaurant was closed . The clause because the restaurant was closed answers questions about why the hostess wouldn't seat us. The seeds will take root wherever there is enough light . Sean will come to your party if you promise to let his band play . Adjective Clauses

Dash "Dashed" redirects here. For the delivery company, see DASHED. Usage varies both within English and in other languages, but the usual convention in printed English text is: Either version may be used to denote a break in a sentence or to set off parenthetical statements (ideally with intradocument consistency). Style and usage guides vary,[1] but often in this function en dashes are used with spaces and em dashes are used without them:[2][Em dash:] A flock of sparrows—some of them juveniles—alighted and sang. Common dashes[edit] There are several forms of dash, of which the most common are: Less common are the two-em dash (⸺) and three-em dash (⸻), both added to Unicode with version 6.1 as U+2E3A and U+2E3B. Figure dash[edit] The figure dash (‒) is so named because it is the same width as a digit, at least in fonts with digits of equal width. The figure dash is used when a dash must be used within numbers (e.g. phone number 555‒0199). En dash[edit] Ranges of values[edit] Electronic usage[edit]

Clavis Sinica: Chinese Vocabulary Extractor Tool This Clavis Sinica applet automatically creates a vocabulary list or vocabulary review sheet from any digitized Chinese text. You can specify the type of vocabulary to be included (character, compounds, or both) and your skill level (beginner, intermediate, or advanced). The higher your skill level, the fewer high-frequency words will be included on your list. With the Vocabulary Review Sheet option, you can print out a list of vocabulary words including character, pinyin, and English definitions for study and review. The Vocabulary List option generates a list you can use as a flashcard set within the Clavis Sinica program to drill yourself on new words. To use the applet, simply paste simplified Chinese text into the text window (or select a simplified Chinese text file on your computer), choose an output type, vocabulary type, and skill level, and press Display. You can download and install the Java Plug-In by clicking here.
Indian historical linguistics: Setting the record straight IT IS rare that Johnson is compelled to respond to comments. But my last post , about the fun parallels in the hybrid development of English and Dravidian languages, seems to have stirred the passions of our readers. Many of them commented, dismissing the post as (at best) misguided and (at worst) a piece of neocolonial rubbish. That is a shame. Studying the history of India’s languages can be immensely fascinating. With so much linguistic diversity in the subcontinent, Indian languages can provide a primer on nearly every major aspect of historical linguistics: the ways in which sound systems and grammars change over time, the impact of socioeconomic, ethnic and religious divides, the influence of foreign languages, and the development of writing systems, to name a few. The central focus of language studies in India is, of course, Sanskrit. Sanskrit’s position of prestige also allowed it to infiltrate the vocabularies of unrelated languages.
