@font-face Solutions & Suggestions In the last post I talked about the design aspect of using CSS3 @font-face, today I would like to extend this topic to the technical side on implementing custom web fonts. So what are the options for implementing web fonts? I'm going to review the three main methods of incorporating @font-face and explain the pros and cons of each method. 1) CSS3 @font-face Standard @font-face First, let's talk about the native way of implementing custom web fonts — @font-face. Bulletproof @font-face Syntax Because every browser supports different font formats (IE supports EOT only, Firefox supports EOT & TTF, and Safari supports OTF, TTF, and SVG), additional font formats are required to be cross-browse. @font-Face Generator If you need to export the fonts in different formats, there is a generator which allows you to generate various font formats from an existing font. Premium @font-Faces Pros & Cons PROS: Full control because the fonts are hosted on your server. 2) Font Service Providers Installing Typekit
ITC Franklin Gothic Franklin Gothic can be distinguished from other sans serif typefaces, as it has a more traditional double-story g. Other main distinguishing characteristics are the tail of the Q and the ear of the g. The tail of the Q curls down from the bottom center of the letter-form in the book weight and shifts slightly to the right in the bolder fonts. Franklin Gothic has an extra bold weight with a combination of subtle irregularities, tapering of strokes near junctions, in its roman form. Franklin Gothic has several widths and weights including Franklin Gothic book, medium, demi, heavy, condensed, and extra condensed. Victor Caruso drew the multi-weight family for the International Typeface Corporation (ITC) in 1980. In 1991, ITC commissioned the Font Bureau in Boston to create condensed, compressed and extra compressed versions of ITC Franklin Gothic. OpenType version supports ISO Adobe 2, Adobe CE, Latin extended characters. It is also called ‘Gothic 744’ by Bitstream.
Typography In philately "typography", especially in the case of 19th century stamps, refers to letterpress printing. Typography is performed by typesetters, compositors, typographers, graphic designers, art directors, manga artists, comic book artists, graffiti artists, clerical workers, and everyone else who arranges type for a product. Until the Digital Age, typography was a specialized occupation. Digitization opened up typography to new generations of visual designers and lay users, and David Jury, Head of Graphic Design at Colchester Institute in England, states that “typography is now something everybody does.”[6] §History[edit] Printing press, 16th century in Germany The essential criterion of type identity was met by medieval print artifacts such as the Latin Pruefening Abbey inscription of 1119 that was created by the same technique as the Phaistos disc. Modern movable type, along with the mechanical printing press, is most often attributed to the goldsmith Johannes Gutenberg. §Scope[edit]

Flawed Typefaces What constitutes a flawed typeface? For this article it is defined as a typeface that is perfectly fine—except for one nagging aspect, usually a single character. A flawed typeface is one that either you avoid using entirely because of this lone defect; or one that you use sparingly—and only then, after some alteration of either your design or the face itself to ameliorate the “flaw”.
