HOME : rufwork 2011 Editor's Note: Elizabeth C. Economy, C.V. Starr Senior Fellow and Director for Asia Studies, is an expert on Chinese domestic and foreign policy, and U.S. By Elizabeth Economy and Adam Segal, CFR.org If there were one word to describe Asia in 2011, it would likely be tremors—not only the physical ones that devastated Japan, but also the political ones that reverberated throughout the region shaking India, China, and Thailand, waking up Burma, and further unsettling North Korea. 1. After a stroke in 2008 and years of poor health, Kim Jung-il was not long for this world.

TEDxSF - A Curation Of People And Ideas... Posted by Tom Foremski - June 5, 2011 I've been to several TEDxSF events but the most recent one felt like a breakthrough event because of the mix of people and talks, plus the new venue. The event was sold out with about 650 tickets for the Yerba Buena location, a larger theater than the Academy of Sciences, where it used to be held. The mix of people was eclectic as always. There were at least two or three talks where I wished for the return of the old Vaudeville stage hook, or maybe a remote controlled trapdoor. But it was a packed afternoon, from noon to 6pm, a bit too long. TED talks are a form of modern theater within an old school format in that it's a one-way stage. However, the formulaic format of TED talks is pretty good, so maybe the organizers know not to mess with what works. Among the standout performances: - Dr. - Eythor Bender and his eLEGS exoskeletons, he showed a woman paralyzed from the waist down walking onto the stage. Simon Mainwaring. Archiving a Landscape | American Craft Council “For the soul, then, beauty is not defined as pleasantness of form but rather as the quality in things that invites absorption and contemplation.” ~Thomas Moore, Care of the Soul My work was born of a place. Specifically, it was born of a dry, hard-scrabble landscape surrounding a house on a hill off of a dirt road in Gallup, New Mexico, where I spent my formative years. As a child, I wandered and memorized that landscape, finding perfect sandstone perches, observing as fallen cactus limbs slowly evolved into dried, lacy skeletons, squeezing unearthed coal in hopes of making diamonds, taking in the smell of juniper and wet dirt after a quick downpour. Careful observation of natural forms in their habitats has been a long-standing personal occupation and fascination, and these observations form the basis for my work. On close examination, what might have otherwise been overlooked can become an object of wonder and poetry. I currently live in Ojai, California.
