History of chicken pox may reduce risk of brain cancer later in life
The chicken pox is one of those pesky illness that affects kids and pains their parents, but it may offer some positive health benefits later in life, experts believe – a reduced risk for developing glioma. In one of the largest studies to date, an international consortium led by researchers in the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center at Baylor College of Medicine reported an inverse relationship between a history of chicken pox and glioma, a type of brain cancer, meaning that children who have had the chicken pox may be less likely to develop brain cancer. The Baylor team led by Dr. Melissa Bondy, a McNair Scholar and associate director for cancer prevention and population sciences at Baylor, and Dr. In the study, the team reviewed information from the Glioma International Case-Control Study is a large, multi-site consortium with data on 4533 cases and 4171 controls collected across five countries. The large study validates earlier studies showing this link, Bondy said.

Frequency of allergic diseases following measles. - PubMed - NCBI Measles infection and Parkinson's disease. - PubMed - NCBI Measles used to put cancer into remission A woman with an incurable cancer is now in remission, thanks, doctors say, to a highly concentrated dose of the measles virus. For 10 years, Stacy Erholtz, 49, battled multiple myeloma, a deadly cancer of the blood. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic say she had received every type of chemotherapy drug available for her cancer and had undergone two stem cell transplants, only to relapse time and again. Then researchers gave her and five other multiple myeloma patients a dose of a highly concentrated, lab-engineered measles virus similar to the measles vaccine. In fact, the dose Erholtz received contained enough of the virus to vaccinate approximately 10 million people. "The idea here is that a virus can be trained to specifically damage a cancer and to leave other tissues in the body unharmed," said the lead study author, Dr. It's a concept known as virotherapy, and it's been done before. Erholtz was cancer-free for nine months. This treatment is still in the early testing stages, though.

Measles - Disease Information Statement (DIS) - Physicians for Informed Consent 2. What are the risks? In the modern era, it is rare to suffer permanent disability or death from measles in the United States. Research studies and national tracking of measles have documented the following: 1 in 10,000 or 0.01% of measles cases are fatal.33 to 3.5 in 10,000 or 0.03–0.035% of measles cases result in seizure.9 1 in 20,000 or 0.005% of measles cases result in measles encephalitis.41 in 80,000 or 0.00125% of cases result in permanent disability from measles encephalitis.4 7 in 1,000 or 0.7% of cases are hospitalized.106 to 22 in 1,000,000 or 0.0006–0.0022% of cases result in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE).11

Infection, vaccines and other environmental triggers of autoimmunity The etiology of autoimmune diseases is still not clear but genetic, immunological, hormonal and environmental factors are considered to be important triggers. Most often autoimmunity is not followed by clinical symptoms unless an additional event such as an environmental factor favors an overt expression. Many environmental factors are known to affect the immune system and may play a role as triggers of the autoimmune mosaic. Infections: bacterial, viral and parasitic infections are known to induce and exacerbate autoimmune diseases, mainly by the mechanism of molecular mimicry. Occupational and other chemical exposures are considered as triggers for autoimmunity. Not only foreign chemicals and agents have been associated with induction of autoimmunity, but also an intrinsic hormonal exposure, such as estrogens. So by diagnosing a new patient with autoimmune disease a wide anamnesis work should be done.

Febrile infectious childhood diseases in the history of cancer patients and matched controls. - PubMed - NCBI Erythema Multiforme Following Live Attenuated Trivalent Measles-Mumps-Rubella Vaccine- Full HTML - Acta Dermato-Venereologica - Content Sir, Erythema multiforme (EM) is a fairly common skin reaction in children (1). It is often elicited by bacterial and viral infections (2). Only rarely is a vaccine the culprit agent. We wish to report such a case. Case Report An 18-month-old boy underwent measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination under the usual schedule for routine childhood immunization in Italy. Fig. 1. Fig. 2. Laboratory testing disclosed: absence of peripheral eosinophilia, normal inflammatory indices (anti-streptococcal and anti-staphylococcal titres were negative, normal erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein); normal urinalysis; normal immunoglobulin (IgE included) levels; negative RAST (RadioAllergoSorbent Test); normal C3 and C4 levels and no anti-nuclear antibodies. The treatment regimen consisted of the administration of low-dose oral steroids, local cortico-antibiotic drugs, an antiseptic solution (eosin water solution 2%) followed by moisturizing creams.

Over-Vaccinated Children & The Allergy Epidemic The global prevalence of allergic diseases is skyrocketing, affecting 30% to 40% of the world’s population. Allergic conditions include food allergies, anaphylaxis, asthma, eczema, allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis and reactions to drugs and insects. Often, these burdensome conditions start young, are overlapping and have the potential to be severe or fatal. A study of children with peanut allergy, for example, found that the median age of onset was 12 months; 40% to 60% of peanut-allergic children had concurrent asthma, atopic dermatitis, and/or other food allergies; and over a third (35%) had experienced anaphylaxis upon initial peanut exposure. Anaphylactic outcomes are worse when multiple allergic conditions are present. …an escalating number of children have been hospitalized for food allergies or have visited an emergency department for primarily food-related anaphylaxis over the past couple of decades. A Perfect Storm Allergy as an inevitable response to vaccination
