På denne hjemmeside fokuseres på de filmiske virkemidler, som de kommer til udtryk i filmens mindste enheder (se den midterste kolonne). Denne metode kaldes Shot-to-shot-analyse. De levende billeders byggesten De mindste enheder kaldes frames (på film er der 24 frames pr sekund). En scene er oftest opbygget af en række shots, mens en sekvens er opbygget af en række scener. De nødvendige hv-spørgsmål I Shot-to-shot-analysen fokuserer man altså på, hvad der kendetegner eller præger det enkelte shot.
