Evaluating Apps with Transformative Use of the iPad in Mind
The app development market is exploding. More and more companies are creating “educational apps”. In some cases, they are simply digital versions of a book or a web based tool. Some seem to have “no educational value” to it at all, but are still sold under the label of “education”. Although, I usually don’t resort to borderline cuss words, I really liked the expression of “crapware”, Sarah Perez over at TechCrunch used when she was reviewing a new app for the Pre-School/Kindergarten crowd. That being said, TinyTap is still a lot better than much of the kids’ apps crapware out there in the iTunes App Store. I have teachers ask me frequently about app recommendations for different subject areas. “What app could I use to teach subtraction?” I usually sigh to myself, when I receive questions like that. I want teachers to be able to, not only ask for and use an app, because someone else recommended it, but I want teachers equipped with the curiosity and the knowledge of: Further Resources:

K-5 iPad Apps to Evaluate Creating: Part Six of Bloom's Revised Taxonomy
In 1948, the Swiss inventor George de Mestral returned from a hike with his dog covered in burs. After examining how nature designed these clinging bristles under a microscope, it dawned on him that a similar structure could function as a clothing fastener. The synthesis of his thoughts and prior experiences gave birth to the invention of Velcro. The process George de Mestral used to arrive at a novel solution for fastening a future generation's sneakers is exactly how Bloom defines synthesis. The Revised Taxonomy differs slightly from the original writing of Benjamin Bloom. Generating: Production of a Unique Communication When Bloom first wrote about this sub-category, he discussed how an effective use of communication of ideas and feelings could create a desired response within a particular audience. Planning: Production of a Plan Following the specific requirements and task objectives, students design a plan of action to solve a problem. Thoughts on Creative Potential Creating Criteria
What Are Functional Skills?
Functional Skills are the essential skills needed for ENGLISH, MATHS and ICT, vital for young people and adults to participate in life, learning and work. Functional Skills feature in most educational and training choices. They are an essential, compulsory element in two main qualification routes for young people from 14 to 24; in apprenticeships and the Foundation Learning Tier, as well as being stand-alone qualifications in their own right at Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2. The development of Functional Skills is seen by the Government as essential to address employers' concerns that young people and adults are not achieving a firm enough grounding in the basics. Functional Skills strengthen and bring consistency to learning routes for young people and adults and have now replaced basic and key skills. Assessments and learning resources to prepare your learners for Functional Skills in ENGLISH, MATHS and ICT are available now from ForSkills. Functional Skills Resources
