Knit, Shear Bliss!: Tea Cosy Knitting Pattern I have such fond memories of visting my Nan as a child. My Nan always made you feel welcome and special. Of course Nan would put on the kettle and warm the tea pot, get out the english floral china tea cups and saucers. These would all go on a delightful tray with the sugar bowl and milk in a little china jug. Best of all Nan always had a treat of cakes or chocolate biscuits or even better chocolate fingers. The hot water would be poured into the pot over tea leaves, never tea bags. I finally sat down and wrote up the pink and red tea cosy knitting pattern. DIY Missoni Blanket There aren’t a ton of chain stores in Brooklyn near me, and even if there were, I am more of an independent business and “mom and pop shop” girl, myself. Unfortunately this means I always miss the designer lines for Target. Ugh, why oh why didn’t I snag any of those Orla Kiely pieces?! Missoni is debuting a line of clothing and home goods for Target this month, and I don’t even need to step in a store to snag the look thanks to Vikki Howell’s DIY version of the blanket! Related Hammock Hammocks are great for the backyard, camping, backpacking, when your pregnant and on bed rest, or for turning your large capacity vehicle (in our case our minivan) into a camping vessel, more on that in this post. We make our own hammocks because: It’s cheap (i.e we can’t afford an ENO).You can customize the size. It’s easy! There are two different methods we have used for making our own hammocks. A piece of fabric roughly 7+ feet long and at least 3 1/2 feet wide. Hammock 1: The Sewing Machine Method Step 1: Lay out your fabric and fold the ‘shorter’ end over to make a 4-5 inch hem. Step 2: Sew the hem using a straight stitch. Step 3: After you have sewn both sides of the hammock thread your webbing through the hem. Step 4: Tie a knot in the webbing and repeat step 3 on the other side. Hammock 2: The No-sew MethodNote: For the No-sew hammock you will also need 3-4 feet of something like this 3mm utility cord. Step 4: Wrap the cord around the hammock where your fist is. Good luck.
How-To: "Stained Glass" Votive Holders By Jenny Ryan Many times when I’m at the grocery or drug store, I can’t resist throwing a few scented votive candles in my cart. When I’m ready to burn them, it’s easy enough to sit one on a cute little vintage china saucer, but I recently decided to try and find a fancier display solution for them. I also wanted the project to be inexpensive, and the materials used to be things I already had on hand. Materials Tissue paper in your desired colors Mod Podge (matte finish), in a pinch you can also use school gluePaintbrush Scissors Glass containers to fit your candle(s), I used thrifted vases and wine tumblers Paper punches in various shapes Q-tips, optional Directions Step 1: Figure out what colors of tissue paper you’d like to use and what paper punch shapes you want to try out. Step 3: Start affixing the punched-out paper shapes to the glass using your paintbrush. Step 5: Once everything is dry, plunk in a votive candle, light the wick and enjoy! More: Related
Savvy Housekeeping Make your own MiniVase Quick! Can you guess what this tiny bud vase is made from? I'll give you one clue: with the right moves, it can be turned into an animal*. Now you're really curious, aren't you? Read on! This modern, ceramic-looking vase can be made in well under 30 seconds and only requires two materials: a 2" glass votive holder and a BALLOON. Camilla Fabbri from Family Chic created these clever little vases by snipping off the mouth of a balloon, leaving about an inch of the neck, and then slipping the balloon over the votive holder. Log Light: A Fireplace Replacement With the summer heat still beating down, it seems rather out of place to be talking about this Realistic Fireplace Log Substitute. However, the main attraction in this case is the effect and ambiance that this artificial log fire produces, rather than providing heat. The unit is made of Polyresin, being quite large with a really authentic log look. When placed in the hearth it creates the rustic charm of a flickering fire whilst not giving off any heat, smell or smoke. The unit holds 11 tea light candles that are included in the set, which provide the natural flicker and warm, cozy light of a real log fire. An additional innovation would be to use scented tea lights that would give off the same visual effect, together with a pleasant fragrance. Environmentally friendly, economical, and easy to use, this fireplace log set fits into a normal fireplace, providing the beauty and ambiance of flickering flames and the great thing is there are no logs to store and no ashes to clean.
Lanterns At some point near the middle of March, I always decide that I’m “done” with winter. The sweaters and jackets get pushed to the back of the closet, the flip flops come out, and I inevitably freeze my butt off for several weeks until the weather catches up with my warm-weather state of mind. Likewise, my cravings for fresh herbs and veggies are always a little ahead of the season. Growing your own herbs is a great way to save money and avoid buying too much at a time and letting most of it go to waste. If it’s still too cold to plant outside where you are (or if you’re short on space!) What you’ll need: Tin containers with snap-on plastic lids (tea, cocoa, and coffee cans are a good bet), coat hangers, pliers, scissors, herbs (I bought basil, rosemary, dill, and cilantro for about $2.50 each), masking tape, coffee filters, a nail, a hammer, X-acto knife, scrap fabric or paper, and glue or spray adhesive. Slide the bottom inside the can, holding it up from inside. Flip the can over.
Retro Fun: Vintage Style Apron This apron is another Sew4Home design original, complete with a free downloadable pattern. Love, love, love the sweetheart neckline and matching mini-sweet pockets. And the happy bottom flounce will have you skipping around your kitchen, just like when you used to twirl in your big-girl-fancy-party-dress... oh, don't even try to tell me you didn't do that! The Simply Sweet floral fabric has the perfect vintage feel, while the big polka dot accents add a modern zing. Clever knotted ties allow infinite adjustability for the neck and waist so you can make a Retro Fun: Vintage Style Apron for every shape and size of family member and friend. This project is a bit more advanced than many we offer here at Sew4Home, mainly because the whole darn thing is edged with mitered bias tape binding. A BIG thanks to our new friend, Barbara Jones, the designer of the beautiful Simply Sweet fabric collection for Henry Glass & Company. Kim Kardashian Flour Bomb: Reality Star Covered In White Powder (PHOTOS) Kim Kardashian met her fate with a bag of flour last night at The London West Hollywood, where she intended to promote her new fragrance, True Reflection, before being covered in white powder by a woman in the hotel lobby. "That probably is the craziest, unexpected, weird thing that ever happened to me," Kim told E! Online. "Like I said to my makeup artist, I wanted more powder and that's a whole lot of translucent powder right there." But Kardashian isn't the first in her clan to be covered with the baking ingredient. "Can you believe how crazy people are?" Kardashian was reportedly concerned about her own safety after Cheban's flour run-in. FROM THE AP: WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Sheriff's deputies say a woman threw powder on Kim Kardashian in the lobby of a West Hollywood hotel where the television personality was hosting an event. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says deputies were called to the unidentified hotel on North San Vicente Boulevard shortly before 8 p.m.
