5 Brain Nutrients Found Only in Meat, Fish and Eggs (NOT Plants) The human brain is the most complex object in the universe. It is also the organ that consumes by far the most energy, compared to its weight. The brain is only about 2% of our body weight, but uses 20% of the energy. This remarkable organ has evolved over millions of years. During this time, humans were omnivores. There are many nutrients in these foods that are absolutely critical for the proper function of this very delicate system. Unless proper care is taken to supplement, going vegan and eschewing animal foods may lead to a deficiency in some of these important substances. Here are 5 nutrients that are very important for the brain and only found in animal foods. 1. Did you know that not a single population in the history of the world has ever willingly adopted a vegan diet? That’s because before the era of supplements, such a dietary shift would have started killing people within a few years. The only good food sources of B12 are animal foods like meat, fish and eggs. 2. 3. 4. 5.
6 Shocking Reasons Why Gluten is Bad For You Awareness of the negative health effects of gluten has increased in the past few years. One 2013 survey shows that a third of Americans are actively trying to eliminate gluten from their diets. But gluten-free is more than just the latest fad… there are multiple studies showing that gluten can cause harmful effects. Here are 6 shocking reasons to avoid gluten. 1. Gluten is a protein composite found in several types of grains, including wheat, spelt, rye and barley. Gluten consists of two proteins… gliadin and glutenin. When flour is mixed with water, gluten forms a sticky cross-linked network of proteins, giving elastic properties to dough and allowing bread to rise when baked (1). Actually, the name gluten is derived from these glue-like properties. When gluten reaches the digestive tract and is exposed to the cells of the immune system, they mistakenly believe that it is coming from some sort of foreign invader, like a bacteria. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Eliminate Gluten For 30 Days… Seriously

Ultimate Chocolate Cupcakes [This recipe was originally shared in August 2013.] This is the 35th cupcake recipe I’ve shared on this site, and can you believe it’s the first chocolate-chocolate version?! I’ve had some chocolate cupcake bases, but those were topped with things like peanut butter frosting, espresso buttercream and salted caramel frosting… then there were the faux Hostess cupcakes, the black-bottom cupcakes and the vegan chocolate cupcakes. They are all fabulous cupcakes, but I felt it was high time that I find a chocolate cupcake and frosting combo that could be “the one” – my go-to when I needed something fabulously rich and overflowing with chocolate flavor. I wanted a from-scratch chocolate cupcake recipe that was supremely moist, as well. Chocolate can tend to be dry and I wanted to avoid that at all cost. First things first – the cake part of these cupcakes is phenomenal. Oh, that frosting. I don’t believe I’ll ever search for another chocolate-chocolate cupcake recipe ever again.
