Interactive - National Film Board of Canada
At the NFB we like change. For 70 years we've experimented, innovated, and produced a legacy of technical and creative firsts in cinema, animation, and documentary. Think McLaren, Lipsett, Brittain, and Jutra; Stereoscopic 3d, VTR, and participatory media. Today, the way we create, consume, and connect with each other changes by the minute. And this evolving collection of stories reflects that reality. It's the result of artists and storytellers of all sorts utilizing new technology, to explore new forms of creation, for a new kind of Canada. The stories they're telling here are new, but share a lot in common with the work that came before: they present distinct voices, strong points-of-view, and unique perspectives. So let the conversation begin. Scary or otherwise.
Chat With Other Tadpoles in Rumpetroll | Underwire
This may be the most bizarre chatroom ever created. It’s called Rumpetroll. In Norwegian, the word means “tadpole,” but the literal translation is “ass troll.” It’s a very clever name, as Rumpetroll is a chat room. Enter, and you’re dropped into a color-shifting primordial soup with a bunch of other tadpoles (that also happen to look like sperm). The visual environment is powered by Canvas, JavaScript and CSS 3. Because of these leading-edge technologies, you’ll need a modern browser like Chrome, Firefox 4 or Safari 5. I’ve been hanging out in Rumpetroll all morning. The creators are four hackers from Oslo, Norway: Daniel Mahal, Hans Petter Eikemo, Hugo Ahlberg and Simen Brekken. See also:
Hannes Nützmann / Gelsomina
For the Ars Electronica festival in 2007 Hanna and Magdalena created Gelsomina, the Voice Knitting Machine: an installation based on an old mechanical knitting machine of the 1970s, that was hacked to become interactive, using voice signals. Therefore they used a microcontroller and 24 small servo motors in order to imitate a pattern card that could be directly controlled by live user input which was processed via a connected computer. For the Industrious|Artefacts exhibition at the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen, Netherlands, the software was completey rewritten, including audio analysis and servo controller. The archive is now closed When I started this PhD there was not very much happening in i-docs land. So I felt I had to assemble my discoveries through this website. Five years later this is not the case anymore. There is so much happening that it is actually mission impossible to follow it all. Design Interactions Research
UMK was commissioned by the Design Museum in London. The project presents perspectives on a fictional future for the United Kingdom. It sees England devolved into four self-contained counties, each free to experiment with governance, economy and lifestyle. These 'live laboratories' interrogate the cultural and ethical impact of existing and new technologies and how they alter the way we live. Digitarians depend on digital technology and all its implicit totalitarianism: tagging, metrics, total surveillance, tracking, data logging and 100% transparency. Their society is organised entirely by market forces; citizen and consumer are the same. The Communo-nuclearist society is a no-growth, limited population experiment. the state provides everything needed for their continued survival. Bioliberals fully embrace biotechnology and the new values that this entails. different technological landscape to our own.
