Language learning: what motivates us? "Where's your name from?" I wasn't expecting to be the subject of my interview with John Schumann, but the linguistics professor had picked up on my Persian surname. Talking to me from California, where he is one of the world's leading academic voices on language learning, he effortlessly puts my own Farsi to shame. Schumann learned Farsi in Iran, where he was director of the country's Peace Corps Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) programme. Shumann's work and that of his colleagues in UCLA's Neurobiology of Language Research Group, is concerned with the processes that happen within the brain when we learn a language. In 2009, Schumann published The Interactional Instinct: The Evolution and Acquisition of Language. "We've developed a theory called 'the interactional instinct'," Schumann says. Could this interactional instinct, then, be the key to learning additional languages? Native English speakers continue to be notoriously bad at mastering foreign languages.

The 8 Minutes That Matter Most I am an English teacher, so my ears perk up when writers talk about their process. I've found the advice handy for lesson planning, too. That's because both writing and planning deal with craft. In writing, you want your audience to be absorbed. John Irving, the author of The Cider House Rules, begins with his last sentence: I write the last line, and then I write the line before that. That is the crux of lesson planning right there -- endings and beginnings. The eight minutes that matter most are the beginning and endings. Here are eight ways to make those eight minutes magical. Beginnings 1. YouTube reaches more 18- to 34-year-olds than any cable channel. 2. If you want to create a safe space for students to take risks, you won't get there with a pry bar. 3. storyline.se Så funkar det – Att vidga sina vyer i språkundervisningen Igår hade jag min första föreläsning och det var en väldigt rolig upplevelse som utmanade mig rejält. Jag hade skrivit manus och förberett mig väl så när det väl var dags kunde jag prata fritt. Men det var också en av sakerna som jag oroat mig för – tänk om jag får blackout. Eller tänk om tiden inte fylls! Jag var faktiskt inte nervös när det väl var dags för jag hade lyssnat på Sara Bruuns föreläsning om att våga ta språnget och gå utanför sin bekvämlighetszon alldeles innan och det lugnade mig. För mig är det inte svårt att prata om digital teknik utan att jag är ovan att föreläsa för lärare. Jag ville med föreläsningen vara så konkret som möjligt och visa på insynen i mitt klassrum och hur vi arbetar med de projekt vi skapar. Jag hade plockat ut tre områden – BlackOutPoetry, Sommarprat och Banksy/Flash Fiction. Jag tipsade även om Pearltrees som jag glömde länka i summeringen så här kommer en länk till den pärla vi har i Engelska 6-9 samt den i Svenska 6-9.
Betygsinflation och missförstånd - Nicklas Mörk Skolverket gick den 2:a maj ut med ett förtydligande och en utvidgad tolkning av begreppet “till övervägande del” som används för betygen D och B. Det dröjde inte länge innan rubrikerna i tidningarna gav intrycket att det nu blivit mycket lättare att få höga betyg.Det dröjde heller inte många timmar innan missuppfattningarna kring förtydligandet började cirkulera. Inte blev det bättre idag när SVT.se publicerade en artikel om att betygen skapar oro och irritation. I artikeln står: “Elever som har ”vissa välutvecklade kunskaper” på A- eller C-nivå utan att klara alla moment på den nivån ska kunna få B respektive D.” Detta stämmer inte. Den knapphändiga och otydliga informationen från Skolverket till skolorna i kombination med att förändringen genomförs så tätt inpå betygsättning har lett till att rektorer,lärare föräldrar och elever på vissa håll missförstått förändringen på samma sätt som SVT gjort. Vad gäller? Det Skolverket gick ut med var inga nyheter. Sprid informationen
Att skissa en trädgård | Blomstertorget Skulle ni vilja ändra något på er trädgård så tycker jag att denna tid på året passar bra till reflektion. Är det någon del som känns trist eller bara outnyttjad? Tror du att ni skulle använda trädgården ännu mer om den bara kändes lite mer välkomnande och ombonad? Oavsätt om ni bott länge i ert hus eller om ni går och drömmer om att bygga ett helt nytt hus så är det nog läge att sätta sig ner och skissa och fundera över vad vill vi med vår trädgård nu och i framtiden? För en tid sedan så träffade jag en familj som beslutat sig för att bygga ett nytt hus. Jag fick frågan om jag ville rita en trädgård till det nya huset och vi tog ett första samtal om vad de tänkte. Inledningsvis lyftes ett antal frågor som vad ska vi göra med några av de träd och buskar som växer i trädgården. För mig känns det riktigt att använda sig av det som finns i trädgården idag. I samtal med familjen tänker jag följande idéer till det nya husets trädgård, här generaliserat;
