Making Your Own Ebooks This is a February 21, 2012 revision of this post, which originally appeared September, 23, 2011. This is one of those posts where I describe something mind-breakingly complex that I did with my computer. The reason I want to post it is so I can find the description after I’ve totally forgotten all the details in six months. Over time, I’ll also be revising this post directly, as well adding links and ideas to the comments section as the information filters through my head—and as I continue making mistakes. [As I often do, I’ll be using photo illos with absolutely no connection to the subject at hand. Plan So suppose I have a document and I want to make it into an ebook. Amazon will let you submit a DOC, but you are more likely to get the formatting you want if you submit an HTML. Barnes and Noble PubIt will take an HTML or an EPUB. For starters, we work with numerous agents and enjoy good relationships with all of them. Rather than recommend a specific agent, I hoped to be able to point authors to a list of agents on the Internet. This may not be all the agents that could be listed, but these are the forty or so we work with at Thomas Nelson. How to self-publish an ebook | Fully Equipped A while back I wrote a column titled "Self-publishing: 25 things you need to know," which was mostly about how to create and sell your own paper book. After folks asked me to do something similar for e-books, I created this article, which has now been updated a few times. I begin with one caveat: The whole e-book market is rapidly evolving, and a lot of self-publishing companies are offering e-book deals bundled into their print book publishing packages, which makes them harder to break out and evaluate. It's all quite complicated, and in an effort to sort through the confusion, I've decided to offer a few basic tips and present what I think are some of the best options out there for creating an e-book quickly and easily. Tips: It's gotta be good: The same rule applies to self-published e-books as it does to print books. E-book publishing options: Amazon offers a 70 percent royalty rate for authors, but some rules apply (see the complete list of terms). "Smashwords is great," she said.
