Visual illustrations allow ELLs to better understand the material while learning important vocabulary. Graphic organizers are most useful to ELLs when presented in small group activities. When teachers begin to use graphic organizers they need to follow some simple steps to make sure ELLs gain knowledge from such a simple yet reliable tool (Merkley & Jefferies, 2001). Teachers should also begin to verbalize the relationship between the ideas, and the information that will be taught. In this example, each node is a song. Try out the visualization on different songs to see how the different layouts and filters look with the different graphs. The report on 47,237 children with weak numeracy levels in England's Every Child Counts scheme found 73% went on to meet average levels. The tutoring involved half an hour of daily tuition over three months. The scheme was originally managed and funded, directly, by the Department for Education. It is now run by Edge Hill University and has developed into two schemes, Numbers Count and 1stClass@Number. Instead of being automatically offered to schools, head teachers now decide whether they want to buy it in as a means of helping their pupils.
