Excel Math K-6 Curriculum
I'm not knocking Singapore, but for me, Math Mammoth:
(1) is vastly easier to schedule and teach;
(2) is easier for my kids to understand; and
(3) includes more practice and review than Singapore.
And, from looking at both Singapore and MM in depth, I don't feel like I'm giving up anything in terms of rigor or conceptual understanding, in return for MM being so much easier to use.
Singapore was designed for use in classrooms, by teachers who were trained in that method. Math Mammoth was written specifically for homeschooling parents, who may or may not have a background in math, so it's designed to be as easy to use as possible. by maymaybean Apr 23
I am so glad that I found this curriculum. It covers fewer topics, but with much more depth...just the way that math should be covered. In addition, it's heavy on teaching mathematical logic through many multi-step word problems. My kids were using Horizons (4th) and Saxon (7/6), and they were doing very well in the curriculum, but weren't really learning anything. When I would sit down with them and ask math questions, they had no idea how to answer them if they weren't presented exactly the way they were in their respective books. I quickly realized the books only teach the "how" of math (the mechanics of working a problem one specific way) but they were not teaching the "why" (the underlying concepts that make the how work). I started looking for a curriculum that could explain the "how" in a kid friendly way.
This curriculum really teaches the concepts and develops the skills that kids nned to have "real" math understanding in high school math courses. I absolutely love this curri by maymaybean Apr 16
