10 Contemporary Photographers Who Shoot in Black and White Once a given, the absence of color in photography from the last few decades is now a deliberate choice, not a technological limitation. So why would a modern photographer opt for black and white, forgoing those vivid Lomo hues or subtle customized tones of an advanced SLR? Here are a few current big shots who don’t care for color, for whom shooting in black and white allows a specific style, a certain punch, a special magic their vision demands. Vintage Crime Scene Photos Superimposed on Modern NY Streets (Warning: Graphic) Photographer and historian Marc Hermann has done a beautiful job pulling historic crime scene photos from the New York Daily News archive to blend them with photographs of the same locations today. For those who live in New York now, it may be easy to forget just how rough the city was in the not-too-distant past. Grisly violence is an undeniable part of New York’s DNA and the juxtaposition of the old, black and white images with the modern “Times Square” version of what most people expect today is incredibly fascinating – truly making ghosts walk amongst us. 427 1/2 Hicks St. Brooklyn, N.Y The tree that stands in front of 923 44th St. in Brooklyn is the only living witness to gangster Frankie Yale’s untimely demise on July 1, 1928. Photographed Illustrated 1 note Quistography 2010 Asylum-seeking Above: Holes in your head today The idea of using an abandoned mental asylum as a location was first suggested to me by a friend, Guy Feldman. I then mentioned it to Matthew, whose prompt Google searches dug up the disused Hellingly Hospital (not so obscure though – it has, to date, 3000 followers on Facebook, or should I say now – ‘likers’ – bah). One weekend we ventured up, on our first expedition of the kind. The trip was rewarding in terms of artistic outcome, and we ventured into more abandoned places with further internet research. I have noted several aspects to shooting in locations like these: First, the mixture of indoor and outdoor light, within a technically ‘indoor’ place. Above: Shaft. Secondly, there is a distinctly pressured context. Above: Scuttled Above: Her fleeting imprint. Compositing, as used in the image above, comes in handy not just for multiplicity endeavours.
