marc_cooper (marc_cooper) CEB - Lost Person Finder The goal of the LPF project is to create a Web system that enables family, friends and neighbors to locate missing people during a disaster event. Input to the LPF will be from a "Disaster Patient Data Exchange" database containing data from the IT systems of the three participating hospitals. Other input is expected from triage area cell phones and social networks. Seekers will be able to search the LPF database, and retrieve the information on desktop and handheld computers. In addition, the system will display pictures and other information on missing persons on large monitors placed at key public locations. This project, conducted by CEB, is one of several undertaken by the NLM to address emergency conditions in the event of a disaster. Lessons From Haiti Will Aid Chile Earlier today Chile experienced a massive earthquake (you can see images of the damage on The BIg Picture). Now, just hours after the event online disaster relief sites are being spun up to aid the survivors. These are all variations on sites that were created to help Haiti survivors. Google quickly sprang into action reusing many Haiti built-tools: Crisis Response – This serves as a portal for all of Google’s efforts. Person Finder: Chile Earthquake – Built on Google’s AppEngine, this app aims to let people enter and retrieve information about people on the ground. Mapmaker Download – Google’s Mapmaker allows you to map the world from home. The Crisis Mappers have also reacted quickly. I have written about how these disaster-relief applications were used in Haiti and the people behind them. If you want to help Donate, help out online, go to a CrisisCamp (there’s one happening in DC today) or spend some time working on the maps of Chile at Mapmaker or Open Street Map.

Calling Saturday morning's quake an "unthinkable disaster," Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said a state of catastrophe in the hardest-hit regions would continue, allowing for the restoration of order and speedy distribution of aid. Looting broke out in parts of the country, including in Concepcion in central coastal Chile, about 70 miles (112 kilometers) from the earthquake's epicenter.
