In 2012, Will Republicans Turn From Id to Ego? - Politics - The
The Republican Party is enjoying its "id" moment right now. In the schema of Sigmund Freud, the id is that part of your psychology that spontaneously reacts and craves emotional and physical fulfillment. Voters want candidates who make them feel good, who make them feel special, who convince them that simply the conscious act of identifying as a conservative is political and powerful. The trouble is that enough Republican primary voters will be looking for something more. But Iowa is a peculiar state. And they expect something more from their candidates than intoxicating Republican chauvinism, too. In a furious effort to catch up, Gov. Two candidates, Mitch Daniels and Mitt Romney, won't play the game at all. And I also predict that voters will think strategically about their options. It is a privilege to be with you on this happy occasion, and, you know, it’s nice to spend a little time outside of Washington. Some of these letters tell stories of heartache and struggle. Now, the teacher of this class instructed the students to ask me any question they wanted. But it was the last question from the last student in the letter that gave me pause. I really enjoyed Alex’s remarks because that's a lot of change. Well, for more than 200 years, we have kept it.
