Introduction – The morning boat Thematic focus for 2017 and 2018 Agriculture and fisheries Working together with farmers, fishermen, seasonal workers, politicians, chefs, retailers and consumers, artists are asked to investigate and respond to the locally grown, caught, gathered and reared food chain. Farming may no longer be the largest economic sector of the island economy, but it is the oldest. As the islands demographic and economy has changed, an increasing proportion of the population are less connected with the rural economy.
The Berlin Artist-Run Galleries You Need to Know Center is located in a narrow, triangular storefront, on the ground floor of a social housing building at the edge of Park am Gleisdreieck. The area, once host to abandoned train tracks and overgrown woods, is now a manicured multipurpose park—one of Berlin’s most recent urban renewal projects since German reunification in 1990. Set between Station Berlin—the converted train station and site of abc (art berlin contemporary) art fair—and the commercial gallery cluster on Potsdamer Straße, new building projects sprouting up provided opportunities for artists to step in and revive unused spaces. The storefront is lined from floor to ceiling with windows and doors, which used to be adorned with the building caretaker’s plants, until artist Lin May Saeed took over in 2003 and founded Center. Over 90 artists and curators have shown at the nonprofit exhibition space, set initially in the middle of a no-man’s land, which has now become a hub of activity. AB: What’s next?

open! | Platform for Art, Culture and the Public Domain ‘…the unfathomable distance between the individual and the geopolitical.’ – Firat Oruc This essay is an exploration of thoughts following an artistic event that happened a year ago, specifically in terms of how it deploys its own forms, intensities and energies that are essentially ungraspable by language. The type of reflection writing enables is therefore specific to its medium. As theorist Rebecca Schneider reminds us in discussing a politics of documentary practices, ‘…media has its specific ways of remembering and will leave their trace on the memory it creates.’ Writing inevitably translates the piece and my relation to it, and writing allows for reflective confrontation with the ambiguities of my position contained in the artistic process. Looking back expands certain insights and diminishes others. I always experienced a ‘suburban malaise’ in my North York home. My parents moved to Toronto in the 1970s for academic appointments at the University of Toronto. Exhibition Frame
