Days Like This… | The Transparent Teacher Today, my students reviewed their first graded essays. I tried out a new way of assessing student work — screencasting. Instead of collecting printed papers, I asked students to write in Google Docs and then share their papers with me so I would also be able to view them online. Instead of scribbling marks in the margins of printed papers, I opened each student’s paper in Google Docs, highlighted text and inserted comments to clarify my thoughts, and then turned on the screen recorder (Jing) to record my voice as I scrolled through the paper and pointed to items with my mouse. I waited while they listened to the feedback today. They were engaged, and I was impressed with their dedication to the task. Using screencasting for assessment has been one of my grand experiments. I “collected” the next round of papers today. All I can say is “wow.” “I loved how in depth and personal jing allowed you to be in grading me. “I really liked the verbal feedback. I love my job. MathCast Rubric Welcome to Film Underground Why Can’t 3D Sound Be the Future of Movies? It’s dark, and it’s about to get darker. You slide ten cents worth of plastic onto your face because it’s supposed to make you see an extra dimension, and you’re paying more for it. There’s no need to do a full intro on 3D. We all know it. We all have opinions about it. Yesterday, after coming late to the game on this one, I discovered the 3D world of sound, and it created an experience more immersive than any 3D I’ve ever seen. Strap on your headphones, take a few minutes of your day off from studying Greek Literature (you won’t use it) or ordering lunch for your boss (he can skip it), and check it out: It’s incredible. The question is whether there’s a practical use for this technology in the movie world. What it Would Require The first requirement isn’t difficult, but the rest are. Plus, holophonic 3D seems magical because your mind does all the work. There’s also the question of how a film score would fit into the puzzle. The massive pro to all of this is the experience.
