About rel="canonical" - Webmaster Tools Help This article describes how you can use canonical URLs to improve link and ranking signals for content available through multiple URL structures or via syndication. SEO 101: What is it, and why is it important? The Beginner's Guide to SEO Search engines are answer machines. They scour billions of pieces of content and evaluate thousands of factors to determine which content is most likely to answer your query. Search engines do all of this by discovering and cataloguing all available content on the Internet (web pages, PDFs, images, videos, etc.) via a process known as “crawling and indexing,” and then ordering it by how well it matches the query in a process we refer to as “ranking.” Which search results are "organic"? As we said earlier, organic search results are the ones that are earned through effective SEO, not paid for (i.e. not advertising). Today, search engine results pages — often referred to as “SERPs” — are filled with both more advertising and more dynamic organic results formats (called “SERP features”) than we've ever seen before. It’s important to remember that search engines make money from advertising. Some SERP features on Google are organic and can be influenced by SEO.

The 50 feeds keeping me updated on SEO SEO is a study that changes every day. I make my living practicing it but I invest a minimum of daily time on keeping myself updated. It is a must. There are several sources of information I like to keep an eye on but RSS feeds and Twitter make up the bulk of it, and I follow people across both. I don’t, however, follow the same people across different channels, largely for two reasons: first to avoid information redundancy; and second because the fact someone has a great blog does not necessarily make their tweets interesting and the other way round. Besides the 50 SEO feeds listed here I follow around 30 more for topics like Web Analytics, Usability, Link building, Information Architecture or any other SEO related discipline. This list has no particular order, I understand titles like “Best 10 SEO feeds ever” would attract more visits but I dislike the approach of “top X whatever”. Here you have them:

Swipe file A swipe file is a collection of tested and proven advertising and sales letters. Keeping a swipe file (templates) is a common practice used by advertising copywriters and creative directors as a ready reference of ideas for projects. Copywriters are not the only ones who can benefit from having a swipe file. As book publishing coach Diane Eble points out, authors and publishers can benefit from creating a swipe file of best-selling titles to give them ideas for their own titles. Publicists can create a swipe file of great press release headlines. Swipe files are a great jumping-off point for anybody who needs to come up with lots of ideas. Swipe files are also commonly used by Internet Marketers who need to gather a lot of resources not only about products but also about marketing methods and strategies.
