Judge says Fairfax prosecutor Raymond Morrogh, accused of being unethical, should stay on case - Crime Scene Posted at 11:17 AM ET, 11/05/2012 Nov 05, 2012 04:17 PM EST TheWashingtonPost A Fairfax prosecutor accused of bias in a capital murder trial has not compromised his independence or acted unethically and will stay on the case, a Prince William County judge ruled Monday. Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Raymond F. Morrogh (D) was accused by defense attorneys of having entanglements and friendships that could affect his judgement as he pursues murder-for-hire charges against Justin M. Defense attorneys had argued that Morrogh’s friendship with Prince William County Commonwealth’s Attorney Paul B. But those convictions were vacated by a federal court recently after a judge found that Ebert’s office didn’t turn over key evidence that could have been used in Wolfe’s defense. Ebert then stepped aside in the case and asked that Morrogh be appointed special prosecutor. “There’s no evidence that [Morrogh’s] relationships will cause him to abandon his duties,” O’Brien said.

Four Cedar Rapids-Metro Area Mayors Support Local Option Sales Tax Extension CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Four metro area mayors who don’t always see eye to eye spoke as one Wednesday to say they supported the extension of the current 1-percent local-option sales tax for 10 years to help their cities pay with infrastructure projects. Voters will weigh in on the sales-tax extension at the Nov. 5 general election. The current local-option sales tax, which has been in place since the spring of 2009, expires in the metro block of cities — Cedar Rapids, Marion, Hiawatha, Robins and Fairfax — on June 30, 2014. Only the mayor of Fairfax was not at the Wednesday news conference at City Hall in Cedar Rapids. "We stand here today, united, with one voice ...," Cedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett said. " ... Photograph: Amir Cohen/Reuters Iowa has the greatest racial disparity between black and white people in America when it comes to arrests for possession of marijuana, according to a major new study on drug crime published on Tuesday. Black Iowans are in fact eight times more likely to be arrested for the crime than white Iowans, the data showed, despite the fact that their rate of marijuana use was about the same. The American Civil Liberties Union, which carried out an analysis of FBI and census data across the US, said African Americans were 8.34 times more likely to be arrested than whites in Iowa, despite making up just 3.1% of the population. After Iowa, the next largest areas of racial disparity were Washington DC, Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. The news stunned some experts.

Activist Adam Kokesh ordered held without bond in D.C. WASHINGTON - A D.C. Superior Court judge has ordered a veteran and activist accused of openly carrying a shotgun in D.C.'s Freedom Plaza held without bond. During a preliminary hearing Monday, an attorney representing Adam Kokesh argued that the stunt -- filmed and posted on YouTube -- was nothing more than political theater. The judge disagreed, ordering that Kokesh be held until his next court appearance. "I consider your client to be a very dangerous man," the judge said. Kokesh had been arrested and charged with drug-related offenses in Fairfax County, Va., earlier in July. He is expected back in a D.C. courtroom Aug. 13.
