12 sites to watch films online for free
As much as we all nostalgically long for the days we patronized local video stores and supported independent neighbourhood theaters, one of the really cool thing about the age of the internet has to be watching films online, without having to leave the house or shelling a penny. Because we, at the NFB, feel confident you would never abandon us for another streaming site (I mean, how could you), we decided to put together and share with you a list of destinations for watching films online. All sites in the following list are free; only one requires you become a member. Popcornflix This site, currently in beta is in my opinion a better general/Hollywood movie site than veoh and OVGuide, where all I ever find is trailers or movie clips. MUBI is “an online movie theater where you watch, discover, and discuss auteur cinema”. SnagFilms SnagFilms is a pleasant blue and grey platform offering tons of film to watch for free. New York Times September 25, 1969 The Screen: Susan Sontag's 'Duet for Cannibals' at Festival By ROGER GREENSPUN THE special providence that protects movie critics decrees that when they do take up honest work they often make surprisingly good movies. In America, we have Peter Bogdanovitch ("Targets") and now Susan Sontag with "Duet for Cannibals," which played last night at the New York Film Festival. Except for some bandages out of Godard, two wigs out of Antonioni, and a leading lady out of Bernardo Betrolucci (Adriana Asti, who is more interesting here than she was in "Before the Revolution"), "Duet for Cannibals" doesn't seem to owe much to anybody except to Miss Sontag and her own idomatic, uncluttered sense of the medium. The film is in Swedish, made in Sweden for a Swedish producer, but the subtitles are Miss Sontag's, and I suspect that as much has been gained as lost in the various translations and transpositions required in realizing the project. Professor Robbert Dijkgraaf Thank you so much, Michael, for this very kind introduction and for the wonderful opportunity to speak here in an institution that has such a long history in the public outreach of the sciences, I think something that we cannot do enough. Today, I will tell you a grand story, which is our thinking of space and time, and in some sense, what is the role of geometry, mathematics in understanding the universe. If you go back in more recent history, for instance, Richard Feynman, the famous particle physicist, he has said that if you really do not know mathematics – and do not be worried, there will not be many equations today – but if you do not really know mathematics, you cannot get across the real feeling of the beauty of nature. The amazing thing is that the mathematics that we are talking about today is, in some sense, very far away from our everyday intuition. This went on. In fact, reality is even stranger.
