Confirmation bias. Tendency of people to favor information that confirms their beliefs or values Confirmation bias, also known as myside bias, is the tendency to search for, interpret, favor, and recall information in a way that confirms or supports one's prior beliefs or values.[1] People display this bias when they select information that supports their views, ignoring contrary information, or when they interpret ambiguous evidence as supporting their existing attitudes.

Confirmation bias

The effect is strongest for desired outcomes, for emotionally charged issues, and for deeply entrenched beliefs. Confirmation bias cannot be eliminated entirely, but it can be managed, for example, by education and training in critical thinking skills.

Annual Review of Neuroscience - Home. Name and face learning in older adults: effects of level of processing, self-generation, and intention to learn. Psychology Department, Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care, 3560 Bathurst Street, Toronto, Ontario M6A 2E1, Canada. atroyer@baycrest.org. Many older adults are interested in strategies to help them learn new names. We examined the learning conditions that provide maximal benefit to name and face learning. In Experiment 1, consistent with levels-of-processing theory, name recall and recognition by 20 younger and 20 older adults was poorest with physical processing, intermediate with phonemic processing, and best with semantic processing. In Experiment 2, name and face learning in 20 younger and 20 older adults was maximized with semantic processing of names and physical processing of faces. INSTITUT D'ETUDE DE LA COGNITION

ENS offers 30 fellowships in all academic disciplines (including cognitive science) and IEC offers 2 fellowships specifically in cognitive science and linguistics. The amount of the monthly stipend is 1000 euros. IEC awards its 2 fellowships on the same basis as ENS, i.e by means of a national competitive exam known as the "ENS international selection".

Are Computer Games Rebooting Our Minds?

For kids and the rest of us, are computer games a boon, or our ruin? The debate over the effects of digital games is running hot in academic circles and beyond at the moment. A recent Maclean's cover headline blared: "How computers make our kids stupid". Meanwhile Steven Johnson, author of a new book called Everything Bad Is Good for You, argues that games and other interactive media sharpen our brains. The debate arrives with full force in Vancouver today, as several hundred digital game creators and theorists assemble for the second annual Digital Games Research Association (DIGRA) conference.

"Digital games are not really taken seriously or well understood," says Suzanne de Castell, a professor of Education at Simon Fraser University and one the organizers of the DIGRA conference. How powerful? Fueling the concern is the recent publication of a study by Thomas Fuchs and Ludger Woessmann of Munich University. Neurological disorders in the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases: now open to public feedback : The Lancet Neurology. The WHO International Classification of Diseases (ICD) provides a taxonomy of nearly all known human diseases, based on the best available evidence.

Neurological disorders in the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases: now open to public feedback : The Lancet Neurology

The ICD is the international standard for diagnostic classification and ensures comparable reporting of health data and the homogenous compilation of national morbidity and mortality statistics. All 194 member states of WHO have agreed to use the ICD. Since its foundation in 1948, WHO has been responsible for the listing and organisation of diseases and their periodic revision in the ICD, including the chapter entitled Diseases of the Nervous System.

Converging studies in empathic listening (Ickes, 1997), emotional intelligence (Bar-On 2000,2001) and conflict resolution (Sanson & Bretherton, 2001; Alvy, 1994) point to the importance of parent training for bringing up socially competent children in a world so changed in western countries that traditional parenting practices are less than effective.

Ridley Stroop who discovered this strange phenomenon in the 1930s. Here is your job: name the colors of the following words. Do NOT read the words...rather, say the color of the words. For example, if the word "BLUE" is printed in a red color, you should say "RED". Say the colors as fast as you can. Try this Interactive Stroop Effect Experiment. [Run Experiment] Also available: print out Stroop Test Mini Cards. Why? The words themselves have a strong influence over your ability to say the color. Speed of Processing Theory: the interference occurs because words are read faster than colors are named.Selective Attention Theory: the interference occurs because naming colors requires more attention than reading words.
