Your Private Photos on your iOS Devices? Not so Private After All. By Juli | February 28, 2012 | 1 comment Social networking app Path demonstrated a serious flaw in iOS security earlier this month, when it was able to download all of a user’s contacts without notification or agreements. As a result, Congress demanded that Apple reveal how it is handling private information, and Apple promised to deliver a more transparent privacy policy. Just what do app developers have access to? According to a new investigation into photo and video sharing on iOS by The New York Times, developers are able to gain access to your photos and videos when you click “agree” on that button that gives them the ability to collect location information. An excerpt from the article: In order to test whether an app can actually access and download photos, The New York Times hired an iOS developer to create a test application called “PhotoSpy.” [via The New York Times] Gorgeous iPhone 5 Concept Looks Insanely Great [PICS]

The iPhone 5 might not be arriving any time soon, but that hasn't stopped artists and design firms from creating their own mock-ups. After analyzing the various iPhone 5 rumors, Italian designer Federico Ciccarese came up with these gorgeous renders. Ciccarese's vision of the iPhone 5 predicts a slightly curved back. The body of the phone, in fact, looks similar to Apple's Magic Mouse.

The display is flat and "retina" in nature and the phone tapers off at the top and bottom. The headphone jack has moved to the side to accommodate the new design and the back looks to be blasted aluminum, similar to what is used on the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and iMac. This isn't the first time Ciccarese has mocked up his own version of future Apple products. We love the way the mockup details the glowing Apple on the back of the phone.

By Juli | February 24, 2012 | No comment yet According to a new rumor, Apple may be planning on ditching its current iPad and iPhone dock connector this year, in favor of a smaller micro dock. Apple’s current 30-pin dock connector that comes equipped on iPods, iPads, and iPhones has been in use by the company for approximately ten years, so it makes sense that it’s time for a change. The switch to a different dock connector would put thousands of iDevice accessories out of commission, including specialized charging devices and docks that are designed for 30-pin ports. This will likely anger some folks, but Apple is not adverse to adopting new equipment when it is deemed necessary by the company, even when it goes against popular opinion. Take, for example, the MacBook Air.

Apple dropped the optical drive from the laptops in order to make them as thin as possible. USA Today called the MacBook Air flawed, and predicted that no one would use the Air as their only computer. Current 30-Pin Cord. The Gatekeeper: Why Microsoft and Google Fear Apple’s Siri. As I watched Andy Rubin’s interview at the Wall Street Journal‘s “D Asia” conference last fall, I became highly intrigued by the comments he made about Apple’s Siri. Rubin told the WSJ’s Walt Mossberg, “I don’t believe your phone should be an assistant…Your phone is a tool for communicating,” he said. “You shouldn’t be communicating with the phone; you should be communicating with somebody on the other side of the phone.”

Andy Rubin is known as the father of Android and was speaking on behalf of Google. Here’s a link to the interview if you haven’t seen it. (MORE: Siri Tricks and Tips: Do More with the iPhone 4S Virtual Assistant) At the same conference, when questioned about Siri, Microsoft’s Andy Lees said it “isn’t super useful.” I have two theories about the responses from Google and Microsoft. Both Microsoft and Google have had major voice UI technology in the works at their labs for a long time. This morning in Europe and Australia, Apple is rolling out iTunes Match a month after its US debut. Currently, the pricing for iTunes Match is as follows: Australia: AU $34.99Canada: CAD $27.99Europe: €24.99United Kingdom: £21.99 Today’s launch follows Apple’s iTunes Store and iTunes Match rollout out in Brazil on December 13th. iTunes Match is an annual subscription service that matches an unlimited number of songs purchased from iTunes, and up to 25,000 of your own songs for immediate download on all of your iOS 5 devices.

Update: It appears Apple’s international launch was premature. Apple Opens Suppliers’ Doors to Labor Group After Foxconn Worker Suicides. Apple Inc. (AAPL) agreed to let outside monitors into factories of partners, such as Foxconn Technology Group (2317), and listed suppliers for the first time to counter criticism about conditions of workers making its gadgets. The iPhone maker becomes the first technology company to join the Fair Labor Association.

The Washington-based FLA was set up in 1999 to monitor workplace environments globally in an initiative by former U.S. President Bill Clinton, and its participants include Nike Inc. (NKE) and Nestle SA. (NESN) Apple also released its annual suppliers’ audit yesterday. Apple’s affiliation with the FLA highlights the risk to multinational companies’ brands due to difficulties in policing suppliers as they outsource manufacturing to cut costs. “Most big corporations have their ‘Nike moment’ at some stage -- when they realize the difficulties of maintaining their standards, particularly in an increasingly global environment,” FLA President Auret van Heerden said. Underage Labor. Apple to possibly debut completely redesigned iPhone in Fall 2012. BGR has just reported that Apple is possibly debuting a completely redesigned iPhone in the fall of 2012, following the trend first set by the iPhone 4S, of new Apple products being launched later in the year, instead of mid-year releases.

According to the report, the new iPhone will incorporate an aluminum back panel (similar to that of the iPad 2) rather than the glass found on the current iPhone models, the iPhone 4 and 4S. From BGR: We have also learned that Apple is planning to use a rubber or plastic material — similar to the material used in the company’s bumper cases — that will be built into the new iPhone case. In all likelihood, this material will be used as a bezel surrounding the front edge of the phone (like the iPhone 3GS bezel) and it will serve two purposes. Reports from earlier stated that Apple’s next-generation iPhone will utilize an aluminum case akin to the one found on the iPad 2, as well as a potentially larger display.
