Best time to trek the Bali Pass- My first ever Himalayan trek: Day 0 of the Bali Pass, arriving in Dehradun. [Sassy_Social_Share] Prologue : 7th June 2024 – Friday A mundane Friday morning, I groan as I look at what lies on the plate before me. Freshly cooked Upma , with a side of channa masala, I look at it once again and gulp it in the hopes of getting over with it soon. Except it wasn’t just any mundane Friday morning. The 3 months of training and impatient waiting was finally coming to an end. What began initially as a curiosity spark and progressively grew into a compulsive fancy, the day had come when I would finally be able to embark on my first ever Himalayan trek- Bali Pass Trek. It was exciting and the prospect of seeing what the day had coming was invigorating.

As I lifted up my packed backpack and bid farewell to my mother and grandparents, I wondered what it would be like to be completely cut off from all contact with them for the entire duration of the trek. An hour of driving through Bangalore, my father, Harish and I reached the airport to meet the rest of the crew. Day 1 of the Bali Pass Trek: Arriving in Sankri from Dehradun. [Sassy_Social_Share] 8th June 2024 – Saturday Bali Pass : Day 0, reaching Dehradun As the minutes passed after 5 o’ clock, the train began to slow down. The next station was Dehradun. The sunrise outside was a nice view and I noticed that a new person had joined in. We got down the train and made a check of all the luggage. As we got out of the station, we walked on until a tempo traveller that was halted on the side of the road came into sight. Quickly enough, our luggage was taken over by a group of 3 porters and they tied it on to the top of the vehicle as we stood there watching.

As we got in to the vehicle, we were met by a few unfamiliar faces. To our surprise, we were also met by another new face. The bus journey began. We stopped at a restaurant for breakfast and ate a hearty meal of aloo parathas and curd. On the way, we stopped by and saw the river Yamuna, gushing against the rocks and exceptionally clean, a far cry from its polluted segments in Delhi.

Day 2 of the Bali Pass Trek: Journey to Bali Pass from Sankri. [Sassy_Social_Share] 9th June 2024 – Sunday Bali Pass : Day 0, reaching DehradunBali Pass : Day 1, arriving in Sankri from Dehradun Today was the day we would start the trek to Bali Pass. After a hearty breakfast, we got into the tempo traveller and and took a 20 minute drive to a nearby village.

With the new construction of the road it was possible to drive upto a certain point, but more importantly, this road was a boon to the village people as now, goods could be transported from one village to another and facilities which were previously out of reach had become much more accessible. The much awaited climb was finally about to begin after all! The first 30 minutes, was surprisingly more tiring than I had anticipated. We took small breaks in the middle to drink water or eat a chikki. We walked through the mud filled paths and you could hear the mighty sounds of the flowing river Supin down below.

Our next stop was to the village of Gangar. Meri beti hai’, he replied. Day 3 of Bali Pass Trek: Journey to Waterfall Camp from Seema. [Sassy_Social_Share] 10th June 2024 – Monday Bali Pass : Day 0, reaching DehradunBali Pass : Day 1, arriving in Sankri from DehradunBali Pass : Day 2, journey to Seema from Sankri Today was one of the craziest experiences I’ve ever had. Yesterday night I woke up at 2 am to a raging stomach ache.

It was scary, it was pitch dark inside the tiny tent and I was unable to fall back asleep. Within 10 mins I had a waste bag in front of me and threw up. The next morning I woke up and felt the sickly sensation from last night. Consequently, my energy on the trek was exponentially reduced and I found myself struggling to keep up with the rest of the team. I took frequent breaks and drank water as the sight of a food item revoked the urge to puke. This took a huge toll on my pace and my legs were starting to get sore with each step. As the day went on I felt myself slipping away into complete exhaustion, my head started to ache and my thighs developed a muscle cramp. I couldn’t do it. Click. ‘Holy shit. Day 4 of Bali Pass Trek: Journey to Ruinsara Lake. [Sassy_Social_Share] 11th June 2024 – Tuesday Bali Pass : Day 0, reaching DehradunBali Pass : Day 1, arriving in Sankri from DehradunBali Pass : Day 2, journey to Seema from SankriBali Pass : Day 3, journey to Waterfall Camp Day four was relatively slow-paced.

However, after the rollercoaster from yesterday, I was still a bit tired to walk with the same pace as the rest of the group. So we split up, once again, the four of us on our own, the others, a rough 200 m ahead. We walked through green forest covered terrains and stopped periodically to explore the flora nearby. We climbed up to reach Ruinsara Lake and explored the vast green meadows surrounding us, hundreds of feet above. I was still dead tired as expected, and took a power nap at every chance I could get. After climbing back down, it was time to cross the bridge overhead the turbulent river.

And by a bridge, I mean, two long logs of wood attached to either end to form a makeshift path. The rest of the day was rather uneventful. Day 5 of Bali Pass Trek: Journey to the Basecamp. [Sassy_Social_Share] 12th June 2024 – Wednesday Bali Pass : Day 0, reaching DehradunBali Pass : Day 1, arriving in Sankri from DehradunBali Pass : Day 2, journey to Seema from SankriBali Pass : Day 3, journey to Waterfall CampBali Pass : Day 4, journey to Ruinsara Lake As the sun ascended above the distant horizon, we began the day with a hot cup of lemon tea.

The mountain weather began establishing its presence and the warm cup brought solace in the chilling air that was surrounding us. We began the journey through the green meadows but soon, a white patch that had been tainted brown due to mud began to coat the ground. As I put a foot on the soft snow below a sense of wonder arose within. The surrounding peaks that were completely snow covered became closer and closer and we would periodically take a 360 degree look around to see the peaks. As we traversed the icy ground there were certain patches of fresh snow that would sink your foot in the moment you put a step on it. Day 6 of Bali Pass: A Chilling Ascent, Summit Triumph, and a Snowy Descent. We were served a cup of hot tea and got ready to begin the last stretch of the trek. The chill of the air was piercing but the thought of finally reaching the summit of the Bali Pass proved to be the fuel to continue walking. It was a steep upward climb in snow. As we walked on, the sun began to rise and the light from the rays opened up visibility for us to walk on. The climb was certainly rigorous and with frequent breaks I found myself at the back of the group, yet again. ‘It’s okay, we are almost at the finish line’, I told myself. The peak was nearly a 100 m away when I started to get my throttle back up again. Last Day of Bali Pass Trek: An Epic Himalayan Adventure in 2024. The landscape began to change, from rocky hills to meadow like descents. We finally reached a point which was told to us to be the final stretch of the arduous walk. Look down, and one sight of the towering height sent shivers down the spine. But we had a porter for each person to help traverse the downhill climb.

Some people even sat on the ground and crawled through each step due to the fear of standing and losing balance. After that risky descent, it was a straightforward path through the meadows. Yet I made it. Bali Pass Trek - A photographic journey from Summers. [Sassy_Social_Share] The legend has it, as per the epic Mahabharata, that the Five Pandava brothers-kings, after having successfully defeated the Kaurava’s in a great war that lasted for 40 days, made an attempt to ascend to Heaven from the mighty Swargarohini peak (20,512 feet) (literally translated as path/gateway to heaven), however only one succeeded. Taken from Bali pass trek base camp at 15,100 feet. The Journey begins as we make our way to Sankri, a beautiful village overlooking lush step fields against a backdrop of thick forested areas.
