Wikipedia Signpost/Newsroom. In addition to once-off and irregular features contributed on an ad hoc basis, the Signpost has a number of regular reports (typically published on a weekly basis) for which experienced contributors tend to claim responsibility. This responsibility entails ensuring the report in question is consistently well-written and submitted before deadline, which in turn involves selecting the stories to be covered, managing the writing of the report (often contributing most of the content themselves, or recruiting other reporters to do so), and communicating with the newsroom to keep editors informed of developments. While all articles are subject to final review by the editor-in-chief (or managing editors), the regular reporter of a feature typically determines its direction and focus. Politics. Tor Project: Anonymity Online. HandiHealth. America the Beautiful. "America the Beautiful" is an American patriotic song. The lyrics were written by Katharine Lee Bates, and the music was composed by church organist and choirmaster Samuel A. Ward. Bates originally wrote the words as a poem, Pikes Peak, first published in the Fourth of July edition of the church periodical The Congregationalist in 1895. At that time, the poem was titled America for publication. Ward had originally written the music, Materna, for the hymn O Mother dear, Jerusalem in 1882, though it was not first published until 1892.[1] Ward's music combined with the Bates poem was first published in 1910 and titled America the Beautiful. The song is one of the most popular of the many American patriotic songs.[2] History[edit] Commemoration plaque atop Pikes Peak in July 1999.

In 1893, at the age of thirty-six, Bates, an English professor at Wellesley College, had taken a train trip to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to teach a short summer school session at Colorado College. (Crossposted to the July-August issue of GroundSwell Magazine - the official publication of Common Ground - USA).For those who don't understand Georgism or Land Value Taxation, the following conversation may prove illuminating.

For everyone else convinced there are no solutions to our economic ills, it will prove enlightening. I recently met with long-time Georgist and expert on government finance, taxation and transportation policy, and Common Ground member, Bill Batt ( and his wife, Karen, at the lovely country home of Common Ground-NYC's Treasurer and past president, Rita Rowan, just outside Albany.

Also in attendance were some international friends of mine, who have recently moved back to New York City, including their precocious tri-lingual 12-year old son, Timothy, and his French mother Emmanuelle (not their real names). We enjoyed lunch outside, on a beautiful Spring day on the grounds. Scott: Of course" Bill: Yeah!

By Maria Popova What tea has to do with critical moments in political history and iconic Russian literature. In 1942, at the peak of WWII, Japan threw the Allies a formidable curveball — it blocked off the Burma Road, the essential artery supplying China with munitions from India to fight the occupying Japanese forces. Desperate for an alternative, the Allies diverted planes to the Himalayas, but the dangerous terrain and inclement weather caused too many pilots to crash into the mountains. A new land route between China and India had to be found, and two OSS men took it upon themselves to find it: Captain Brooke Dolan, an American explorer, and Major Ilia Tolstoy, Leo Tolstoy’s grandson. To do so, they’d have to cross Tibet and seek the permission of a 7-year-old boy: The Dalai Lama. Undeterred, the pair proceeded with their mission and came carrying a letter from President Roosevelt. Via The National Archives via MetaFilter Share on Tumblr. Seniors for a Democratic Society. SenSanders: Let us wage a moral and po... Taxpayers Should Fund Public Universities, Not Private Ones. In the New York Times today, Luigi Zingales criticizes student loan programs for inflating tuition rates. Basically, he figures that whenever federal aid levels go up, universities raise their tuition rates and suck in all the extra money.

Students themselves end up just as deeply in debt as they were before. I suspect there's something to this for private universities. But I have my doubts about Zingales's favored solution: Investors could finance students’ education with equity rather than debt. Tax agency enforces repayment of loans contingent on income, though the payments of the wealthiest graduates are capped, and therefore less affluent graduates need to be charged more to make the program viable than in the system I am proposing.)

I wonder how the tax incidence of a program like this would differ from simply raising income tax rates on the wealthy a bit? So what's the solution? Public universities revert to their traditional function of providing good educations at very low cost. Porto Alegre. Porto Alegre (local Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈpoɾtʊ aˈlɛɡɾɪ] ( );[1] Happy Harbour) is the capital and largest city in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Founded in 1769 by Manuel Sepúlveda, who used the fictitious name or pseudonym José Marcelino de Figueiredo (fictitious name), to hide their identity. Its population of 1,509,939 inhabitants (2010) makes it the tenth most populous city in the country and the centre of Brazil's fourth largest metropolitan area, with 4,405,760 inhabitants (2010).

The city is the southernmost capital city of a Brazilian state.[2] Porto Alegre is one of the top cultural, political and economic centers of Brazil. Porto Alegre was founded in 1769 by Manuel Jorge Gomes de Sepúlveda, who used the fictitious name or pseudonym José Marcelino de Figueiredo (fictitious name), to hide their identity; but the officially date is 1772 whit the act signed by immigrants from the Azores, Portugal. History[edit] Porto Alegre in 1852. Otávio Rocha Square in 1930. Participatory democracy. Grassroots democracy. Grassroots democracy is a tendency towards designing political processes where as much decision-making authority as practical is shifted to the organization's lowest geographic level of organization: principle of subsidiarity.

[clarification needed] To cite a specific hypothetical example, a national grassroots organization would place as much decision-making power as possible in the hands of a local chapter instead of the head office. The principle is that for democratic power to be best exercised it must be vested in a local community instead of isolated, atomized individuals, essentially making it the opposite of national supremacy. As such, grassroots organizations exist in contrast to so-called participatory systems, which tend to allow individuals equal access to decision-making irrespective of their standing in a local community, or which particular community they reside in.

See also[edit] External links[edit] Deliberative democracy. Deliberative democracy or discursive democracy is a form of democracy in which deliberation is central to decision making. It adopts elements of both consensus decision-making and majority rule. Deliberative democracy differs from traditional democratic theory in that authentic deliberation, not mere voting, is the primary source of legitimacy for the law.

Deliberative democracy is compatible with both representative democracy and direct democracy. Some practitioners and theorists use the term to encompass representative bodies whose members authentically deliberate on legislation without unequal distributions of power, while others use the term exclusively to refer to decision-making directly by lay citizens, as in direct democracy. The term "deliberative democracy" was originally coined by Joseph M. Strengths and weaknesses[edit] History[edit] Consensus democracy. Consensus democracy is the application of consensus decision-making to the process of legislation in a democracy. It is characterised by a decision-making structure which involves and takes into account as broad a range of opinions as possible, as opposed to systems where minority opinions can potentially be ignored by vote-winning majorities.[1] Consensus democracy also features increased citizen participation both in determining the political agenda and in the decision-making process itself. Some[who?] Have pointed to developments in information and communication technology as potential facilitators of such systems. Examples[edit] Canada[edit] In Canada, the territorial governments of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut also operate on a consensus model, unlike the oppositional political party structure that prevails elsewhere in Canada.

Guernsey[edit] Consensus (non-party) government operates in Guernsey in the Channel Islands. Green Party (Ireland) The Green Party (Irish: Comhaontas Glas) is a Green political party in Ireland. It was founded as the Ecology Party of Ireland in 1981 by Dublin teacher Christopher Fettes. The party became the Green Alliance in 1983 and in 1987 was renamed to its current title in English. Its leader is Eamon Ryan, Deputy Leader Catherine Martin and chairman Roderic O'Gorman. Green Party candidates have been elected to all levels of representation; local, Dáil and European Parliament, and in 2007 the party gained its first representation in the Northern Ireland Assembly, the Northern Ireland party having become a region of the Irish party in the previous year.

The Greens became part of the Irish government for the first time following the Irish general election, 2007, having agreed upon a programme for government in coalition with Fianna Fáil and the Progressive Democrats. In the wake of the Irish financial crisis, the party came under pressure to withdraw its support for the administration. Open Source Democracy, WeMatter.com. Open Democratic. John Dewey. John Dewey (/ˈduːi/; FAA October 20, 1859 – June 1, 1952) was an American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer whose ideas have been influential in education and social reform. Dewey is one of the primary figures associated with philosophy of pragmatism and is considered one of the founders of functional psychology.

A well-known public intellectual, he was also a major voice of progressive education and liberalism.[2][3] Although Dewey is known best for his publications concerning education, he also wrote about many other topics, including epistemology, metaphysics, aesthetics, art, logic, social theory, and ethics. Known for his advocacy of democracy, Dewey considered two fundamental elements—schools and civil society—as being major topics needing attention and reconstruction to encourage experimental intelligence and plurality.
