Roger Bacon Outdoors
Roger Bacon Outdoors publishes independent camping and hiking gear reviews and gear comparison guides for anyone who sleeps outside. Our coverage spans backpacks from 20L daypacks to 65L haulers, tents and shelters, sleeping bags, quilts and pads, footwear for trail, approach and camp, coolers and camp kitchens, headlamps and camp lighting, water filters, first aid kits and camp accessories. More than 550 reviews and guides also cover field skills: Leave No Trace practice, plant and wildlife safety, cooking over fire, and packing and maintenance. We start by mapping the market: we weigh capacity, fabric denier, hydrostatic head and comfort ratings, study long-term owner feedback, and score models on durability, weight-to-warmth and value for money. Cons get the same space as pros so readers can match gear to their trip and budget. Rankings are refreshed for the 2026 season as new gear ships. Editorial is led by Jake Thompson, an avid backpacker and gear tester who has logged thousands of trail miles across national parks. The site is reader-supported: no brand pays for placement.
