How to Heat Your Chicken Coop with Solar Power

Cold weather can really take a toll on your egg-laying hens. In winter, chickens tend to lay less often, and if their coop gets too cold, it can affect their health. If your chicken coop isn’t located somewhere that’s easily connected to electricity, you might struggle to ensure that your flock stays warm on those cold winter nights. How can you heat their coop without connecting to your home’s power? Keep reading to learn how a simple solar setup can help.

The Equipment You’ll Need

To build a simple solar heating system for your chicken coop, you’ll need the following equipment:

  1. Solar panel: For this setup, 1 solar panel should be enough. It should be between 100 and 200 watts to power a heater, but if you want to power anything else inside the coop, consider something larger.
  2. Charge controller: This regulates the flow of power to prevent overcharging of the solar battery.
  3. Solar battery: The battery itself will store energy for use at night or on cloudy days; look for one that’s either 12 or 24 volts, and provides a high depth of discharge.
  4. Power inverter: This is only necessary if you’re using an AC heater. The inverter changes the DC power your panels make into AC power that your heater can use. If you have a heater that runs on DC power, you can skip this piece of equipment.
  5. Low-wattage heater or heating pad: Select one that can keep the coop warm without overheating your hens. Ensure that it’s equipped with safety features that minimize the risk of a fire.

Install the Solar Panel

The first thing you’ll need to install is the solar panel. Somewhere that it gets maximum light exposure; the roof of your coop is usually a good option. Make sure it is secured properly and tilted at an adequate angle to capture the maximum amount of sunlight.

Connect the Charge Controller and Battery

Run wires from the solar panel to the charge controller, then connect the charge controller to the battery. Make sure you use proper gauge wiring and follow all manufacturer instructions to ensure that the installation is safe.

Add Your Inverter

If you have an AC-powered heater, you should now connect an inverter to your solar battery. This will convert the DC power stored in the batteries and made by the panels into usable AC energy for your heater. If you have a DC heater or heating pad, skip this step.

Install the Heater

Finally, place your heater or heating pad inside the coop, positioning it to avoid contact with bedding or water. Connect it to the Pylontech Pelio battery or inverter (if using one), and your heater will be ready to use. Regularly check on the system to ensure the solar panel is clean and all connections remain secure. Now your egg layers can be warm all winter long!
