Ardipithecus FAQ

Eleven papers in tomorrow's issue of Science describe the research on one exceptional skeleton (numbered ARA-VP-6/500, nicknamed "Ardi") as well as more than thirty other individuals, mostly represented by isolated teeth with a few partial sets of teeth. I have a lot of material to share about these papers and how they change things in paleoanthropology – so much that I can't possibly fit it all into one post. So I'm starting out with a basic overview of the main points, organized as an FAQ. Over the next few days I'll be exploring some of the most central issues in closer detail: in particular, I expect I'll be posting a new story every day for the next week or so. I will also have a short article coming out in Seed sometime this week, I will post a link when that is up.

Fall of the Neanderthals: Volume of modern humans infiltrating Europe cited as critical factor. New research sheds light on why, after 300,000 years of domination, European Neanderthals abruptly disappeared.

Fall of the Neanderthals: Volume of modern humans infiltrating Europe cited as critical factor

Researchers from the University of Cambridge have discovered that modern humans coming from Africa swarmed the region, arriving with over ten times the population as the Neanderthal inhabitants. The reasons for the relatively sudden disappearance of the European Neanderthal populations across the continent around 40,000 years ago has for long remained one of the great mysteries of human evolution. The Many Mysteries of Neanderthals. Editor's Note: This is Part 6 in a 10-part LiveScience series on the origin, evolution and future of the human species and the mysteries that remain to be solved.

The Many Mysteries of Neanderthals

We are currently the only human species alive, but as recently as maybe 24,000 years ago another one walked the earth — the Neanderthals. These extinct humans were the closest relatives we had, and tantalizing new hints from researchers suggest that we might have been intimately close indeed. The mystery of whether Neanderthals and us had sex might possibly get solved if the entire Neanderthal genome is reported soon as expected.

The matter of why they died and we succeeded, however, remains an open question. Neanderthal. The exact date of their extinction is disputed.

Neanderthal

Fossils found in the Vindija Cave in Croatia have been dated to between 33,000 and 32,000 years old, and Neanderthal artifacts from Gorham's Cave in Gibraltar are believed to be less than 30,000 years old, but a recent study has redated fossils at two Spanish sites as 45,000 years old, 10,000 years older than previously thought, and may cast doubt on recent datings of other sites.

Cro-Magnon (Eurasian Early Modern Human) skeletal remains showing some "Neanderthal traits" have been found in Lagar Velho in Portugal and dated to 24,500 years ago, and in Cioclovina in Romania dated to 35,000 years ago, suggesting that there may have been an extensive admixture of the Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal populations throughout Europe.[10][11][12][13][14][15] With an average cranial capacity of 1600 cc,[20] Neanderthal's cranial capacity is notably larger than the 1400 cc average for modern humans, indicating that their brain size was larger.

Name[edit] Complete Neanderthal genome sequenced: DNA signatures found in p. Researchers have produced the first whole genome sequence of the 3 billion letters in the Neanderthal genome, and the initial analysis suggests that up to 2 percent of the DNA in the genome of present-day humans outside of Africa originated in Neanderthals or in Neanderthals' ancestors.

The international research team, which includes researchers from the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the National Institutes of Health, reports its findings in the May 7, 2010, issue of Science. The current fossil record suggests that Neanderthals, or Homo neanderthalensis, diverged from the primate line that led to present-day humans, or Homo sapiens, some 400,000 years ago in Africa.

Neanderthals migrated north into Eurasia, where they became a geographically isolated group that evolved independently from the line that became modern humans in Africa. They lived in Europe and western Asia, as far east as southern Siberia and as far south as the Middle East. Neanderthal genome yields insights into human evolution and evid. The dinosaurs in your garden

Yes, really. Photograph: Dave Hone The dinosaurs first arose in the Late Triassic period about 225m years ago. No specific ancestral species is identified, but we recognise that there is a distinct lineage of animals that can be grouped together by shared features of their anatomy that we call dinosaurs. This group has three main lineages: the huge sauropodomorphs, the herbivorous and diverse ornithischians and the (mostly) carnivorous theropods. Science. CH11 GENETICS. History. American History.
