Many a Friday evening were spent here after a long week of work; enjoying the refreshing feel of the water cooling us down followed by the warmth of the sun drying us as we laid on our towels and relaxed, looking forward to a weekend of fun. At just a 10 minute drive from Perigord Retreats, a 2 minute drive from the medieval town of Gourdon and often on the road to one of our excursions, it provides an excellent opportunity to stop off for a delicious picnic and an afternoon swim (water temperature is very comfortable during the summer and autumn). Possibly the most interesting part of this lake is the fashion in which people and nature are seamlessly integrated.

Before we moved in, one of the lovely things we remembered about the property was the positioning of two palm tree s outside of the swimming pool. We felt it gave it a tropical feel and now love listening to the leaves rustle when we have a little wind. Each time we walk pass, we admire them and even had pigeons nesting in them last year. With our irrigation system now working properly, we realise we have a couple of areas in our lawn that could do with some specimen planting. With this is mind, off we trotted to the nurseries to find something suitable. Found a couple of great specimens, one of which had to lay down on a huge trailer to get it back home. We live in an area of unspoilt countryside that has rolling hills. Having decided where to put it so it got the afternoon and evening sun, we commenced the digging process.

This past Sunday, we headed over to a small village called Lamothe-Fénelon, a 15 minute drive from Perigord Retreats. I’ve been to this Vide Grenier before and found some lovely little quirky things. As usual, we found something to buy. 2 half barrels. By the time we had finished our little morning stroll, we made our way back towards the car. We managed to snap a couple of quick photos whilst we were there.
Perigord Retreats in spring. Perigord Retreats in Spring. March has been warm this year, 22 degrees centigrade (72 Fahrenheit) and full sunshine during the day which has been fabulous. We had been concerned that this early spring may be ruined by frost but, so far, we are in the clear. As part of our continued development to make Perigord Retreats more attractive to our visiting artists, we are always filling spaces with additional plants and trees. We are gradually developing an orchard full of cherries, peaches, apricots, apples, plums and pears. When we cut the grass in the field, we make sure we save the cuttings and mulch them round the bases of the trees. The Perigord region is famous for its figs and we have planted lots of bushes.
The camellias have been showing off their flowers and we have several colours. The azaleas are also in full bloom with beautiful colours and long lasting in the process. Perigord Retreats in spring. New addition: Jacuzzi. Last July, 2019, it was hot – I mean really hot. We had some lovely visitors from Texas who were used to the heat but even so, we struggled. Fans everywhere, air conditioning where possible, doors and windows open or shut to suit the mood.
Dinner became later and later as it was too hot to eat. We needed a Jacuzzi. Our indoor swimming pool was warm. The Texans suggested we got ourselves a Jacuzzi – they all said they would love to sit in there as the sun went down outside Villa Quercy (see it here) and so, a plan started to evolve. Anyone that has bought a hot tub/spa/Jacuzzi will understand there is a whole science behind it. A great deal of research followed by; was it cheaper to buy in England or Spain and transport or do we find one in France. That was only one job. Having identified the right spa, we then had to ring the USA to find out depth of concrete pad etc. Now for delivery.
