Here are four big ways that writing and playing MMORPGs are alike:
1. Progression
In MMORPGs, you must gain experience to make your character better. When you get enough experience, your level will go up. Most of the time, each level-up is shown by a number, and the higher the number, the further you have come. You can easily keep track of your work and feel like you're making real progress when you blog. If you're a blogger, you might not care if you get old or new readers. On the other hand, you might be a writer who cares about how many people visit your site each week or month.
I'm the second type of writer because I constantly check my blog's statistics with Google Analytics. There are many statistics that experienced bloggers use to measure how well their blog is doing, such as the bounce rate, the average time spent on the site, how recently a visitor has been there, etc. For my own blog, I currently focus on the number of weekly viewers and the number of new visitors.
The monthly and weekly guest graphs make it easy for me to see how my blog is doing over time. When the number of readers goes up by more than 10% from week to week or month to month, I know that my blog is getting better.
2. Improvement
Both in MMORPGs and in writing, the idea of getting better is very important. There are many ways to make your character better in MMORPGs. Most of the time, improving your character means learning new skills and powers or getting better equipment. Most of the time, it takes the most time to get the most powerful skills, and you usually have to do the hardest jobs or quests to get the best gear.
I think that making changes to a blog is a lot like making changes to your character, except that you can always make changes to a blog. I love that there is always room for improvement in writing.
I've only been blogging for about two months, but I've read a lot of pieces about how to make a blog better. For SEO (Search Engine Optimization), it's very important to use the right keywords in your posts, since a lot of your traffic will come from search engines in the long run. Backlinks are also important because they will bring in more visitors and raise your search engine ranking as more sites link to your blog.
I've found that, on average, the more posts I make on my blog, the more people come to read it. Not only that, but the posts that were better and took me longer to write got more views than the other ones. Every time I write a post, it gets better. Looking back, the first few posts I wrote in December aren't as good as the ones I've written in the last week. As with most things in life, the more you do something, the better you will get at it. Blogging is no different.
3. Working together
Most MMORPGs need people to work together. Teamwork is important in most MMORPGs' endgames, whether it's a dungeon, a raid, or just a party quest. Even though some people might not know it, this is also true of blogs.
Bloggers who do well work together with other bloggers in the same field and trade links. For example, my blog is about fantasy sports and video games, so I could ask the owner of another fantasy sports blog to put my link on his/her site, and I would do the same for him/her.
You can also comment on other blogs to get backlinks and use social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter to get more fans. It can be hard to be a successful blogger if you don't share your thoughts with others or connect with other bloggers or site owners.
Use blog directories, sites for submitting articles, forums, and social networking sites when you write. When used right, all of these tools can be very useful for a writer.
4. The Race
One of the main reasons I keep blogging and playing video games is because there is so much competition. Millions of players compete against each other in MMORPGs. They want to move up in the rankings, make their characters stronger, or win PvP fights. Competition is the same in the "blogosphere" as it is everywhere else.
Serious writers will add their blogs to directories of blogs to get as much attention as possible for their blogs. They will also send their blog posts to sites where people can submit articles and add their links to sites like Digg and StumbleUpon.
Most people want their blogs to be at the top of ranking sites for blogs, like Technorati, so that their posts and blogs will be seen. There are currently more than 120,000 blogs on Technorati, which makes it very hard, especially for younger blogs, to get into the Top 100.
Bloggers also compete to be one of the first five people to respond on posts on popular blogs and websites. This is a great way to get backlinks, but a lot of people already know about it, so there is a lot of competition.
