What women really want: to marry a rich man. Despite 40 years of reforms to promote gender equality at work, a woman’s financial dependence on a man “has lost none of its attractions”, she said. In a 52-page report published by the Centre for Policy Studies think tank, Dr Hakim continued: “Women’s aspiration to marry up, if they can, to a man who is better-educated and higher-earning, persists in most European countries. “Women thereby continue to use marriage as an alternative or supplement to their employment careers.” Dr Hakim’s research drew on an extensive review of existing studies from around the world, census data, and national surveys conducted in Britain and Spain.
An analysis of figures for Britain shows that in 1949, 20 per cent of women married husbands with significantly higher levels of education than their own. By the late 1990s, the proportion of women who were “marrying up” had almost doubled to 38 per cent. Similar patterns are seen across much of Europe, the US and Australia. U.S. teenager tortured in Kuwait and barred re-entry into the U.S. - Glenn Greenwald. (updated below) Gulet Mohamed is an 18-year-old American citizen whose family is Somalian. His parents moved with him to the U.S. when he was 2 or 3 years old, and he has lived in the U.S. ever since.
In March, 2009, he went to study Arabic and Islam in Yemen (in Sana’a, the nation’s capital), and, after several weeks, left (at his mother’s urging) and went to visit his mother’s family in Somalia, staying with his uncle there for several months. Roughly one year ago, he left Somalia and traveled to Kuwait to stay with other family members who live there. Like many teenagers who reach early adulthood, he was motivated in his travels by a desire to see the world, to study, and to get to know his family’s ancestral homeland and his faraway relatives. At all times, Mohamed traveled on an American passport and had valid visas for all the countries he visited. That was very much my experience as well. This event is significant for multiple reasons, many of them obvious.
Almost Everything Is A Crime In America Now: 14 Of The Most Ridiculous Things That Americans Are Being Arrested For. Doesn't it seem like almost everything is becoming a crime in America now? Americans are being arrested and charged with crimes for doing things like leaving dog poop on the ground, opening up Christmas presents early, not recycling properly, farting in class and having brown lawns. But is it healthy for our society for the police to be involved in such silly things? Every single day the United States inches closer to becoming a totalitarian society. While there are some that would welcome this shift, the truth is that throughout history the societies that have experienced the greatest economic prosperity have all had at least a certain level of freedom.
Business thrives when people feel free to live and work. When a government tightens the grip too much many people just start shutting down. We are throwing anyone and everyone in prison these days. According to the U.S. That is a sign of a very, very sick society. Or both. #12 A U.S. Suddenly we need to "get tough" on everyone. Christopher Nolan’s interview with brother Jonathan in the ‘Inception’ shooting script. Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 6:49 pm · December 7th, 2010 If you’ve been itching for more “Inception,” this week will likely be a good one for you. The DVD/Blu-ray hits shelves today, packed with plenty of features that’ll keep you geek-gasming all the way into the holiday and through awards season.
One item that’s been on the market for a few months now is “Inception: The Shooting Script.” I received the book in the mail this afternoon and was pleasantly surprised to find a longish 10-page interview with Christopher Nolan as conducted by his brother (and “The Dark Knight” co-writer) Jonathan. Okay, it’s not THAT insightful. And it has a lot of the usual talking points (Christopher) Nolan exhausted on the press tour for the film. I particularly liked this exchange: CN: There are moments where you worry that you might be putting too much in and alienating the audience. There’s also this nifty drawing depicting the entire concept of the film (click for larger version): Related Posts. The Recombinant DNA of the Mash-Up - Interactive Feature.
