To many students, puppy videos and amassing a ridiculously large circle of “friends” is the epitome of social networking. It's been said and discussed often here and many places that a real shift for educators is moving from teacher to learner. Not so much moving, we still need teachers, expertise matters but until we see ourselves as learners and intentionally show are students we can't be the educator our students need us to be. Last week I began my ECMP 355 course with largely freshman pre-service teachers.

My usual introduction to my course reminds them that they are the winners of education. They were successful students because they were largely compliant and knew how to survive and thrive in a system that values a "mind your own business" style of learning. Do what you're told, when you're told to, and you'll be fine. Learning isn't very self directed in this system. Students wait to be told what to learn. I'm trying to get them to consider something new. Last year i read Ewan's post about a 100 hour challenge. 1. 2. 3. 4. That's it. Photo: The Flipped Classroom: Pro and Con.

In 2012, I attended the ISTE conference in San Diego, CA. While I was only there for about 36 hours, it was easy for me to pick up on one of the hottest topics for the three-day event. The "flipped classroom" was being discussed in social lounges, in conference sessions, on the exhibit floor, on the hashtag and even at dinner. People wanted to know what it was, what it wasn't, how it's done and why it works. Others wanted to sing its praises and often included a vignette about how it works in their classroom and how it transformed learning for their students. What It Is According to the description on ASCD's page for the newly released book, Flip Your Classroom: Reach Every Student in Every Class Every Day, by flipped-classroom pioneers Aaron Sams and Jonathan Bergmann, "In this model of instruction, students watch recorded lectures for homework and complete their assignments, labs, and tests in class.

By Kate Messner Everyone’s buzzing about Pinterest, a new social media tool that connects people through the things they like—but for a growing number of users in classrooms and media centers, it’s fast becoming a powerful resource where teachers and students share images, store lesson plans, read about current events, watch video clips, and collect their favorite apps.

Pinterest bills itself as a virtual pinboard that helps users “organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web.” Although still in beta phase, the site has grown astronomically—faster than even Facebook and Twitter—reaching 10 million visitors each month. Getting started is easy: an existing member can send you an invitation or you can click “Request an Invite” on the main page and start creating boards where you can collect photos, articles, and other clippings on just about any topic.

“I use it to mostly promote books and reading,” says Ludwig. A portion of Sarah Ludwig's "research" board More on Pinterest. Four Ways to Use Pinterest in Education. We’ve come up with a list of four ways for teachers to use Pinterest: Lesson Plans- As briefly mentioned above, Pinterest is a superb visual resource full of pictures, videos, and website links. Pinterest can be a fun and exciting tool inside and outside the classroom. Is there a fifth way in which you would incorporate Pinterest into the classroom?

10 Ways Librarians Can be a Marketing Genius Like Lady Gaga. FindingDulcinea to do research. Being a school librarian, I am often asked by both students and teachers alike ways to find materials to use for papers, speeches or even extra credit. That is my job as a media specialist, to teach and help people sift through information and help people decide what is good and what is bad. I came across a site called findingDulcinea, which according to the site is the librarian of the Internet. It is used to teach people how to find good materials and information instead of having to sift and sort through thousands of websites. In today's age, people automatically go to google to get their information. Even I am guilty of googling something that I want to learn about fast, but, often, the information isn't always credible enough to use for research or an accurate paper.

Dulcinea offers viewers information about different search engines and alternative sites to use for accurate and relevant information. A database can cost a school district thousands of dollars. Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi headlined the event, and several women leaders spoke at the event, including Anu Bhagwati from the Service Women’s Action Network, Margaret Ann Hamburg from the Food and Drug Administration, and Rand Construction CEO Linda Rabbitt.

At one point during the event, Pelosi told the audience about the weekly Tuesday dinners that she would have with several Democratic Members of Congress, including Sen. Barbara Boxer and Rep.
