The photographer’s studio has been built in the grounds of his residence on the outskirts of Greater São Paulo – Brazil. Having already had a working space in this area for a while it became spatially insufficient due to the growing portfolio of work, boxes of negatives, equipment and so on. Therefore, a new spot was necessary to accommodate his workspace (desk, workbench, shelves for digital files) in a more comfortable, reserved and inspiring way. Mitsunori Sano. Still the West Village home of his widow, Dorothy, the new garden features two of Roy Lichtenstein’s outdoor sculptures. The project also includes the renovation of a guest apartment and penthouse office with views of the garden. The planted roof’s sedum carpet partially covers two eyebrow skylights over the artist studio below. Designed to modulate light, the thin shell skylights were built using innovative fabrication technologies. Shelf-Pod / Kazuya Morita Architecture Studio. The client owns an extensive collection of books on the subject of Islamic history, so he requested that we create this building with the maximum capacity for its storage and exhibition. In order to satisfy this demand effectively, we designed a lattice structure made from 25mm thick laminated pine-board which serve as book-shelves. Workshop / Covachita Taller de Arquitectura. Architects: Covachita Location: San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León, México Architect In Charge: Fernando Aguilar, Roberto Nuñez, Ana Cantú, Diana Treviño Area: 50 sqm Project Year: 2012 Photography: 18·26 Agencia de Fotografía The workshop project was born from the idea of finding alternatives to land use in the city.
The imposition of a rigid system of commercialization of land forces people to always have to negotiate at a disadvantage. This system processes on the speculation that the owner of the land kidnaps the regulations of sale and rent prices. A flexible structure that uses prefabricated materials for its construction, initially it proposes a level playing field from speculation for the buyer, in that the negotiation is not for the total and definitive impact on the property, but for the possibilities of establishing ephemeral, mutable and evolving settlements. Various theories have cemented their bases in the possibility of creating settlements that may evolve over time. Garden studio in Amsterdam Watergraafsmeer / CC-Studio. At least that was the out of the box answer cc-studio came up with after having been asked to add more space to the ground floor apartment of the family Maarten and Lori Lens-FitzGerald in Watergraafsmeer – a lovely living district of Amsterdam. Extending would have added square metres but would have meant destroying a relatively new kitchen, not adding any new rooms due to the building layout and planning restrictions. But more importantly it would have narrowed the 12m deep garden. AD Classics: Sangath / Balkrishna Doshi. Balkrishna Doshi‘s own studio, Sangath, features a series of sunken vaults sheathed in china mosaic as well as a small grassy terraced amphitheater and flowing water details.
Having been considered the building that fully describes himself, Sangath is a complete combination of Doshi‘s architectural themes from his previous work including complex interiors and structures, ambiguous edges, vaults and terraces. More about Sangath after the break. Upon entering the complex, one immediately sees the silhouette of a vault lingering behind an exterior wall and a slight view of the interior is present through a small break in the surface.
The path turns and forces the occupant off of the north-south axis and alongside the elevated garden walls. Now visible in perspective, the vaults begin to recede into the background above the grassy amphitheater, water channels and gardens in the foreground. Sangath also expresses Balkrishna Doshi’s desire for a connection between nature and the individual.
