Lib Dems condemn MP's criticism of Israel ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day. 25 January 2013Last updated at 10:05 ET The Liberal Democrats have "condemned" their MP David Ward for his "use of language" in a statement about Israel's treatment of Palestinians, issued ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day. He accused "the Jews" in Israel of "inflicting atrocities on Palestinians... on a daily basis". Mr Ward has been summoned to a meeting with party whips next week.
But the MP told the BBC he had chosen his words carefully and did not regret the timing of the statement. The MP said it was "regrettable" he had been reprimanded by Liberal Democrat officials. 'Sickening' This Sunday - Holocaust Memorial Day - marks the 68th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp, where more than one million people - mostly Jews - died. Mr Ward, who has represented Bradford East since 2010, described Auschwitz as "the Nazi concentration and extermination camp which is the site of the largest mass murder in history" on his website. "I Shall Not Hate": Gaza Doctor Izzeldin Abuelaish on Democracy Now -- January 19, 2011. January 19th, 2011 3:36 PM Democracy Now! AMY GOODMAN: Yesterday marked the second anniversary of the end of Israel’s assault on Gaza. Dubbed "Operation Cast Lead," up to 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed in the 22-day assault between December 28th, 2008 and January 18th, 2009. More than half the Palestinians killed were civilians, over 300 of them children. Today we spend the rest of the hour remembering the story of just one Palestinian family behind those numbers. Dr. During the assault, Dr. On January 16, 2009, a day and a half before the official end of the war, Dr. Moments after Dr. ANJALI KAMAT: On January 16th, when Dr. He explains that Dr. A visibly emotional Eldar explains that the doctor had unsuccessfully tried to get out for many days and was afraid to even raise a white flag.
The anchor calls on the Israeli Defense Forces to allow ambulances to get to the doctor’s family. AMY GOODMAN: That was the live broadcast of Israel’s Channel 10 News on January 16, 2009. UK’s Observer adds “kill Jews” to Hamas leader Khaled Meshal’s Gaza speech when he did not say it. In its report on Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal’s speech in Gaza on Saturday, The Observer, the Sunday sister paper of The Guardian, quoted Meshaal saying the following words: We don’t kill Jews because they are Jews.
We kill the Zionists because they are conquerors and we will continue to kill anyone who takes our land and our holy places … We will free Jerusalem inch by inch, stone by stone. This however is a blatant mistranslation. What Meshaal actually said is: We do not fight the Jews because they are Jews. We fight the Zionist occupiers and aggressors. And we will fight anyone who tries to occupy our lands or attacks us. Can you see the massive difference? Resistance “a means not an end” The Observer painted Meshaal’s speech as “uncompromising” and most other media called it “fiery.”
I have not seen any reports pointing out this passage in Meshaal’s speech Resistance for us is a means and not an end. Update, 9 December. Israel Withholds $100 Million of Palestinian Money, Builds on E1. OperationEgypt: @Op_Israel... Gaza baby 'only knew how to smile' 26 November 2012Last updated at 04:42 ET The death of civilians on either side in the Israel-Gaza conflict is tragic - especially when children are among the casualties. The BBC correspondent in Gaza, Jon Donnison, witnessed just such a tragedy at close quarters.
My friend and colleague Jehad Mashhrawi is usually the last to leave our Gaza bureau. Hard-working but softly spoken, he often stays late, beavering away on a laptop that is rarely out of arm's reach. He has a cool head - unflappable, when others like me are flapping around him. But on the Wednesday before last - only an hour or so after Gaza's latest war erupted with Israel's killing of Hamas military commander Ahmed al-Jabari - Jehad burst out of the editing suite screaming. He sprinted down the stairs, his head in his hands, his face ripped with anguish. He had just had a call from a friend to tell him the Israeli military had bombed his house and that his 11-month-old baby boy Omar was dead. Omar was a picture-book baby. Omar Baddar: 5 Lies the Media Keeps Repeating About Gaza. As Israel continues to pound Gaza, the Palestinian death toll of the latest round of violence has crossed the 100 mark.
Thus far, the American media has given Israeli officials and spokespersons a free pass to shape the narrative of this conflict with falsehoods. Here are the top 5 lies the media doesn't challenge about the crisis in Gaza: 1. Israel Was Forced to Respond to Rockets to Defend Its Citizens CNN, like many other American outlets, chose to begin the story of the latest round of violence in Gaza on November 10th, when 4 Israeli soldiers were wounded by Palestinian fire, and the IDF "retaliated" by killing several Palestinians. 2.
It must be aggravating for Israel's propagandists when high-ranking political officials slip and get off the sanitized/approved message for public consumption. 3. If Israel's main objective were indeed to end the rocket fire from Gaza, all it had to do was accept the truce offered by the Palestinian factions before the Jabari assassination. 4. 5. Exposed: UN agency rips IDF for video alleging militants use its Gaza schools to launch rockets. After UNRWA protest, Israel hides video falsely alleging firing from Gaza schools. The Israeli army has hidden from public view a YouTube video that suggested UN-run schools in Gaza were used as rocket launching bases after the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) strongly denied the allegations.
UNRWA had objected to the Israeli army’s “creation” of animations depicting firing from schools. A search of the Israeli army’s official YouTube account revealed that the video condemned by UNRWA were no longer accessible. Is this a tacit admission by Israel that the propaganda it posted was indeed false? No spokesperson from UNRWA was immediately available for comment. 3494_10151284963142970_734238050_n.jpg (JPEG Image, 480×264 pixels) Government complex in Gaza turned into rubble. Anonymous hacker group attacks Israeli websites. 16 November 2012Last updated at 08:13 ET Anonymous announced its attacks via Twitter Hacking group Anonymous has launched a series of cyber attacks against websites in Israel. Data bombardments briefly knocked some sites offline and led to others being defaced with pro-Palestinian messages.
The OpIsrael campaign was launched by the hacking collective in retaliation for attacks on Gaza. The cyber attacks come as the Israeli army updates its web campaign adding "achievements" and "badges" for regular visitors. Propaganda war Anonymous said it had launched the OpIsrael campaign following threats by the Israeli government to cut all Gaza's telecommunication links. "We are ANONYMOUS and NO ONE shuts down the Internet on our watch," it said. The group warned the Israeli government not to cut off telecom and web links and urged it to end military operations in Gaza. Called IDF Ranks, the tools add a "game" element to the blog and reward repeat visitors with points. It's Palestinians who have the right to defend themselves | Seumas Milne. The way western politicians and media have pontificated about Israel's onslaught on Gaza, you'd think it was facing an unprovoked attack from a well-armed foreign power.
Israel had every "right to defend itself", Barack Obama declared. "No country on earth would tolerate missiles raining down on its citizens from outside its borders. " He was echoed by Britain's foreign secretary, William Hague, who declared that the Palestinian Islamists of Hamas bore "principal responsibility" for Israel's bombardment of the open-air prison that is the Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, most western media have echoed Israel's claim that its assault is in retaliation for Hamas rocket attacks; the BBC speaks wearisomely of a conflict of "ancient hatreds". Israel's prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, had plenty of motivation to unleash a new round of bloodletting. True, the bloodshed hasn't so far been on the scale of Operation Cast Lead in 2008-9, which left 1,400 Palestinians dead in three weeks.
