This fall Matthew Heimbach, a student at the public university in the Baltimore suburbs proposed starting a white student union. His calls attracted immediate attention; with his cloudy but very emphatic views on race, he’s excellent at courting publicity for the 21,000-student university. It might have been but another in the long line of incidents of campus racism that pop up every few years around the country. Young people who imagine themselves political provocateurs or satirists have defended their “ghetto themed” parties and stereotype-laden newspaper column missives or acts of campus vandalism by begging offended parties to have a better sense of humor.

Heimbach used to be the president of Towson’s Youth for Western Civilization chapter, which was disbanded in March 2012 after members scrawled “White Pride” all over campus. He now insists that a White Student Union is not about white supremacy, but akin to a black student union or an LGBT group.
Heimbach told the Towson newspaper that white students face discrimination at the university: We essentially want to replicate what every student union does on campus. The Baltimore Sun reports: Victor Collins, the university's assistant vice president of student affairs for diversity, said he believes Heimbach's group should be treated like other campus groups as long as its members meet the requirements and obey Towson's rules.

Senior Matthew Heimbach, the prospective president, said he hopes that the University will consider the application anyway. “Free speech advocates in Maryland are supporting our case and agree that University policies are at best in the gray or worst outright unconstitutional,” he said. “Our message will not be silenced, we have the right to meet. To gain SGA affiliation, a student group must draft a pre-approved constitution, and submit the names of eight prospective members and an adviser, who can be any faculty and staff member.
