Facebook Twitter

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the temporal bone of the skull. This joint allows us to move our jaw, talk, chew, and yawn.

Disorders of the TMJ can cause pain, discomfort, and limitations in the ability to use the jaw.

Symptoms of TMJ disorders may include:

Pain or tenderness in the jaw joint area or in the muscles used for chewing

Difficulty or pain when chewing or opening the mouth

Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when moving the jaw
