BT promises fibre to most of London by 2011

Earlier this year, BT said it was adding 114 London exchanges to the few already on the fibre schedule, bringing coverage to 87% of the capital. Now, BT says it hopes to finish that work by March 2011. While the latest rollout is part of plans to cover two-thirds of the UK in fibre by 2015, London looks set to benefit more quickly than the rest of the country. The spring deadline will also see fibre laid to a few hundred other exchanges around the country, bringing the total including London to more than 460 out of the 5,600 across the UK. Because of the population density, urban centres such as London have the potential to offer better economic returns than rural areas, but BT also wants London covered in fibre before the 2012 Olympics. However, even if Londoners have fibre running to their exchange, their home may not benefit from speedier broadband. Www.bsnl.co.in/service/broadband_list_of_cities.pdf.

Contact the author Suella Hansen From the FTTH Council’s global rankings for FTTH penetration (Exhibit 1) we can gain some insights into the thorny question of how to achieve fibre rollout in the face of a difficult cost versus revenue equation. South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan are the leaders in Fibre to the Building deployment with their dense urban dwellings assisting the economic case via demographic and geographic patterns. The leaders in straight FTTH deployment are Japan, Sweden, Norway, Slovenia, Iceland and Denmark where in most cases geography is less useful for the cause.
