When the Japanese national soccer team was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Asian Cup, voices pointed out the players' mindset as one of the reasons.
Japan conceded a penalty kick in extra time in the second half and lost 1-2 in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup Qatar against Iran held at Al Rayyan Education City Stadium in Qatar on the 3rd (Korean time).
Among the teams participating in this Asian Cup, the two teams with the highest FIFA rankings (Japan 17th and Iran 21st) faced each other in the quarterfinals. Japan defeated Bahrain 3-1 in the round of 16 and advanced to the quarterfinals, while Iran defeated Syria in a penalty shootout.
It was Japan who scored the first goal in the match between the contenders for the championship. Iran finished the first half tied 0-1 as Morita Hidemasa scored the first goal in the 28th minute of the first half, but Mohammad Mohebi scored an equalizer in the 10th minute of the second half to balance the game.
