Katya's Non-Profit Marketing Blog. Tue, May 08 2012 Filed under: Marketing essentials • The Boston Consulting Group has some interesting new research on millennials, including who they are, what they want and how to talk to them. The highlights? Among the most interesting findings is that millennials - who were taught to recycle in kindergarten - are more likely to take certain socially conscious actions during their daily life.

They are apt to buy products that support their principles and more likely than other generations to spread the word about a cause campaign or participate in fundraising events. They are highly social creatures online (and off) are more likely than others to speak up online, whether it’s to rate a product or upload content. On the other hand, their affinity for causes doesn’t necessarily translate into higher levels of volunteerism. The report notes another important universal quality of millennials: they are distrustful of corporate messengers and more inclined to believe their friends and peers. By Sharon Jayson, USA TODAY The most detailed study to date of the 18- to 29-year-old Millennial generation finds this group probably will be the most educated in American history. But the 50 million Millennials also have the highest share who are unemployed or out of the workforce in almost four decades, according to the study, released today by the Pew Research Center.

"It's a very consequential generation," says Pew's Paul Taylor, the report's co-editor. "It has made its mark in some fairly dramatic ways. " Pew's analysis includes its own data, such as a new survey of 2,020 adults, including 830 Millennials, conducted by landline and cellphone last month. Pew's report also includes comparisons of Millennials with other generations, based on more than two decades of Pew surveys. David Morrison of Twentysomething Inc., a Philadelphia-based consulting and research firm, says Pew's data are important because so much research on Millennials is market-based. •Political and social. Young Adults: The Future of Social Activism. The profound impact social media has had on our society (and the world) in the past years has led people to take it far more seriously and think differently about how it can affect social issues. Not only are people sharing content with family and friends, but they’re standing up and supporting issues they feel strongly about. In 2010, TBWA/Worlwide posed the question, “How can brands engage young adults in social responsibility?” The answers were critically important, yet simple: make it easy, make it social, make it fun. Two years later the study has been updated, and insights into engaging this crucial audience of pro-social consumers, as well as ideas about creating a better world have been found. More young adults (ages 20-28) are now actively supporting the causes they care about.

They’re going beyond simply being informed or talking about social issues with their friends and instead taking real action in ways that companies and organizations should take note. Via: TakePart. Why 'Slacktivists' Are More Active Than You Think [INFOGRAPHIC] From SOPA to Trayvon Martin, KONY 2012 to the 'Bully' movie, causes are all the rage in the social space this year.

Yet many people would argue that social media campaigns lack the action component of live activism — dubbing those who sign up for them "slacktivists. " Sortable created this infographic, which looks at the trend of sharing, posting and tweeting to make a difference. Sortable says slacktivists are twice as likely to volunteer, twice as likely to ask for donations, twice as likely to take part in an event and four times as likely to encourage others to sign a petition or contact a politician.
