A prestigious debut game in Korea! A 19-year-old top prospect shines on the future

Lee Woo-jin, 19, chose to challenge himself differently from other volleyball players in November last year. He joined the prestigious Italian volleyball club Vero Balli Monza as a trainee and became an official player this year. He became the first Korean high school player to go directly to Europe.

His official debut match will be held in Korea. He started in Monza in the Korean-Italian men's volleyball global super match held at Suwon Gymnasium on the 7th and kept the court in all four sets. The outside heater finished his debut successfully by scoring a total of eight points, including one point each for serve and blocking.

Monza coach Masimo Ekelie said, "He has trained with us since the last season, and he has shown great progress. He has improved both technically and physically."

There are still some areas that need to be supplemented. "I think I need more time to adjust before I can perform well at Monza. There are areas where I need to improve in serving and receiving," Ekelie said in a cold assessment. However, he expected his future to be "a player who is definitely superior to those of his peers."

"It was my first match, and I was nervous about cheering for them. I don't think I did well," Lee said. "I was too stiff at first, but I felt a little better in the second or third set."

Korean Air setter Han made a declaration of war the previous day, saying, "I will keep serving to Lee Woo-jin." In fact, Han's sharp serve bothered Lee Woo-jin. "I expected it for sure, but it was hard to stop him," Lee said.

While training in Italy, Lee confirmed the path forward. "Italy has a lot of tall players. There are definitely many differences in blocking," Lee said. "I think I need to play a more delicate game. I think I lack a lot right now."

As Korean men's volleyball has not continued to perform well in international competitions, the "crisis theory" continues to emerge. Lee Woo-jin is considered as a hope to lead the heyday of Korean men's volleyball again. "As much as I'm looking forward to it, I'll learn a lot. I want to remain a great player when I come back to Korea," Lee Woo-jin said. "I'll make sure that I can be heard as a good player in any team."
