Duke Divinity Call & Response Blog | Faith & Leadership | Carol Howard Merritt: Five cultural shifts that should affect the way we do church. September 22, 2011 Churches aren’t the most culturally savvy places. I know that some congregations are still fighting about whether they should be singing “contemporary” songs, which were written in the 1980s. Or they’re wrestling over the use of PowerPoint, which can be tiresome for people who have endured two decades of PP board meetings. It’s probably good that most churches aren’t all wrapped up in the latest fads. We don’t have the cash to keep up with most of it, and if we do, we’re probably better off spending that money on feeding the homeless rather than making sure the youth room has the newest flat-screen TV.
But there are cultural shifts that congregations and church leaders need to track and respond to sensibly. 1) Finances. Are people ashamed of their monetary situation in our congregations? 2) Work hours. Do we have opportunities to worship or engage in the community beyond Sunday morning? 3) Families. 4) The Internet. 5) Politics. Photo Album. Costa Rica In t- 18 days. Bartholomew County Public Library. IN Columbus. You may think that the only way to see the history of Columbus is to tour the churches, houses, and other buildings that have made the city architecturally famous. While I am not telling you not to do these things, I want to give you another, perhaps more relaxing, way to truly experience some of Columbus' best history. The Columbus Bar was originally opened in the 1930's (and the building itself has a great story dating back to 1890), which has made it one of the oldest continually operating bars in the state. Throughout the years, CB has seen many different owners, a few changes of the interior, and a variety of menu options.
There were times when CB served good food and good brew in a lively bar setting, and times when, well, it didn't have it all together. Today, thanks to owners Jon Myers and Doug Memering, you will find a tasty selection of food, a welcoming atmosphere, and the home of the Powerhouse Brewing Co. Don't think that CB only provides a nice place to hang out. The Evil Empire: White Sugar | Chef Daniel's Best Dishes. UU Small Group Ministry Network.
