ECOFOGÃO - Ecological Wood Stoves. A comparative risk assessment of burden of disease and injury attributable to 67 risk factors and risk factor clusters in 21 regions, 1990–2010: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010. Background Quantification of the disease burden caused by different risks informs prevention by providing an account of health loss different to that provided by a disease-by-disease analysis.
No complete revision of global disease burden caused by risk factors has been done since a comparative risk assessment in 2000, and no previous analysis has assessed changes in burden attributable to risk factors over time. Methods We estimated deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs; sum of years lived with disability [YLD] and years of life lost [YLL]) attributable to the independent effects of 67 risk factors and clusters of risk factors for 21 regions in 1990 and 2010. We estimated exposure distributions for each year, region, sex, and age group, and relative risks per unit of exposure by systematically reviewing and synthesising published and unpublished data.
Findings Interpretation Funding. UW engineers get grant to make cookstoves 10 times cleaner for developing world. Nearly 500 million households – roughly 3 billion people, or 42 percent of the world’s population – rely on burning materials such as wood, animal dung or coal in stoves for cooking and heating their homes.
Often these stoves are crudely designed, and poor ventilation and damp wood can create a smoky, hazardous indoor environment – day after day. High resolutionClick to expand Rodney Rascona One of the more efficient cookstoves used in developing countries.

After working full time on stoves for 8 years in 15 countries, Prakti has the key to be the first enterprise to unlock the global stove market. Minh Cuong Le Quan is the co-founder of Prakti Design - here is a snapshot of the beginning of his company’s journey at sea. Barely 10 days into it, the voyage already proves to be a landmark experience on an intimate level. Most of us know about the wonders of our planet, at the same time it is confined and on the verge of environmental collapse. Indeed it was a deep emotion, sighting humpback whales a few hundred meters away as the ship was reaching for safety in Honolulu. Likewise, I was aware of the pollution of oceans. Feeling that emotional pulse -and feeling stuff in the hands- sheds a new light on previous learning about our place on earth. Minh Cuong LE QUAN.
