What is Breast Preserving Cancer Surgery?

Facebook Twitter

Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) or Breast preserving cancer surgery removes cancer while preserving as much normal breast tissue as possible. Some healthy tissue and lymph nodes are usually removed as well.

Depending on how much tissue is removed, breast-conserving surgery is referred to as a lumpectomy, segmental mastectomy, quadrantectomy, and partial mastectomy.

Only the cancerous portion of the breast is removed during Breast-conserving surgery. The cancer mass, as well as some breast tissue around the tumor, are removed. The size and location of the lump will determine how much of the breast is removed.

The surgeon may also remove some of the lymph nodes beneath your arm to determine whether or not cancer has spread there. Breast cancer often spreads to lymph nodes. It has the potential to spread to other places of the body.

Radiation treatment is often used after Breast-conserving surgery. This destroys cancer cells that may not have been removed during surgery. Chemotherapy and radiation may be indicated after Breast preserving cancer surgery.
