Untitled. Untitled. The rise and rise of Facebook is producing a scramble by marketers in companies and non profits to leverage its huge global database, passionate communities and traffic generated by its 750 million users. Google is looking over its shoulder as Facebook grows at over 10 million users a month and sits currently at number two on web traffic rankings according to Alexa.com. Facebook Overtakes Google Last year Facebook surpassed Google for the top ranking for total time spent online. Google is even being forced to continually adjust its search engine algorithms to cater for the social web that provides more prominence for social channels in its search results.

Facebook has also become the 3rd largest video website with 46.6 million viewers sitting behind number one ranked video content property provider Google with its YouTube site and Yahoo at second ranking. He’s brought us there before. Untitled. Understanding how your social campaign is performing requires a fine mix of data and interpretation, as many marketers know. But it’s not always as simple as that. A lot of brands are left asking, “What does all of this data mean to my social channels?” Social media firm 5Loom , which is owned by Council member IMRE , created a new concept to turn a pile of analytics into contextual opportunities for brands.

To find out more, the Firm Voice dug a little deeper in a Q&A with Crystalyn Stuart, president of 5Loom powered by IMRE, about data storytelling and how it can help brands tell compelling stories. What is data storytelling? CS: In two parts, it’s (1) how we use data visualization to help us see and read the story social data tells, and (2) how we as social media experts package that story and make adjustments to campaigns. It should, but unless we can find the answer to the question “so what?” Which pieces of social media data are most relevant? What do you mean by context? Untitled. View from the terrace, Yajure Hotel -- San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua I played with a crab. I made friends with the lady at the market. I cooked an amazing dinner of steak and potatoes. I spent hours just contemplating my life, and what I want to make of it. I started journaling with a pen and paper for the first time in ages. There is nothing sweeter than this moment — when I decide that to be true.

I stand and walk and watch myself. When I look at being the best I can be — it’s big, way bigger than a blog. Sometimes that means I don’t publish a new post for several weeks. Today I go out for my first surf lesson. I probably won’t write a lot about my experiences surfing, but for the next month I plan to go out several times a week and hopefully catch a few waves.

Thanks for being a part of this. I hope you take the space regularly to be who you are, whatever that may be, without any compromise, or any explanation, or any self doubt. You are on the greatest path there could possibly be. Untitled. Untitled. Untitled. Love him or hate him, the man knows how to mobilize a following. (Photo by Scandic Hotels.) However you might feel about Jamie Oliver — most seem to love him or hate him — you can’t deny that the man has a following, and he knows how to mobilize it. Since he declared this Saturday, May 19, Food Revolution Day — calling on “an international community of foodies, chefs, parents, educators, companies, activists and celebrities to arm people with the knowledge and tools to make healthier food choices” — that community has responded in force. So far they’ve planned over 600 events in 58 countries to answer the celebrity chef and real-food champion’s call.

The events range from privately hosted dinner parties to school excursions to cooking and gardening workshops — anything that falls under the mantle of spreading the gospel of good food and healthy living. If you’re in Amsterdam, you can take a “Good Food Tour” of the city. Valentine describes his mantra as “Why wait ’til first grade?” Untitled. Steve Lawrence AO dedicated his working life to driving social innovation and finding solutions for social disadvantage.

Steve took time to impart the learning from his wealth of experience in a special Yakety Yak event held on May 10, 2012, in Sydney. Steve was interviewed by Peter Thompson. Steve Lawrence was the Chief Executive Officer at Australia Social Innovation eXchange (ASIX). Prior to his role at ASIX, Steve was the Founding CEO of WorkVentures for 29 years. Over the last 30 years Steve was part of creating over 13 new not-for-profit organisations including JOB futures, United Way Sydney, Jobs Australia and Social Ventures Australia. Steve lectured regularly on social enterprise, local economic development and not-for-profit management and he is the co-author of ‘Nonprofits in Business’ (1995). Steve was a Founding Partner of the Australian School for Social Entrepreneurs. Untitled. What are the tools that can help you give an unforgettable presentation? After several years of speaking in public, I've had to develop my own system to ensure that each and every presentation goes off without a hitch.

And yes, there are some great tools and tips to ensure that this happens. This blog post is not about your content. I'm going to assume that the content rocks and that you know what you're going to talk about. The Public Speaker's Master Toolkit: The Rider. If you want to ensure that you have a great event, you have to ensure that all of your audio and visual requirements are met (long before you show up at the venue).

Why is this so complicated? It seems like a lot and very detail oriented, but here's the thing: they're paying me to give a great presentation and this is what it takes - from my experience - for me to deliver that. The computer. Did I miss anything? By Mitch Joel. Untitled. Untitled. Untitled. Untitled. I have to confess I felt pretty insignificant listening to journalist Eyal Press speak on NPR about his new book, Beautiful Souls. The book is about heroes, not the ones we celebrate, but those we might facetiously call the "little people". They may be small in status but they're gigantic in terms of courage.

For example, there is the story of Paul Grüninger, the Swiss police commander who refused a direct order from his superiors in 1938 to stop all Jews from entering Switzerland. By disregarding the order, and falsifying papers for the fleeing Jews, Grüninger saved the lives of hundreds if not thousands. For this action he was sacked in 1939 and lived in disgrace and poverty for the rest of his life. Or take the story of Leyla Wydler, an accountant who noticed something odd with the books and reported it to her bosses. No one whom Press profiles in his book would be described as exceptional in conventional terms. What does it take to exert courage today? Untitled. Facebook’s IPO was obviously the single most discussed topic on Twitter today. The good folks over at social media data platform DataSift monitored what Twitter users were saying about the IPO throughout the day and came up with some interesting conclusions. Turns out, the ups and downs of how Twitter’s users felt about the stock pretty much mirrored the price of Facebook’s stock as the day progressed.

Basically, DataSift notes, every time the volume of negative chatter on Twitter increased, Facebook’s stock price dropped within 20 minutes. “So if people had traded based on signals today to buy/sell Facebook stock,” the company told us,”they might have done quite well.” To create this graph, DataSift recorded 95,019 interactions from 58,665 authors over a period of 6 hours. For the most part, of course, this is just a fun exercise in tracking Twitter data. Untitled. Untitled. Outdoor clothing company Patagonia has always been recognized as a leader in social and environmental sustainability. But recent developments at the company could revolutionize how we view clothing and force other businesses to become more transparent about their supply chains . Patagonia has just released The Footprint Chronicles , an online tool to provide consumers with a closer look at the company’s supply chain.

It contains map of the world pinpointing all of the company’s factories and textile mills. However, every factory is clickable, allowing the user to view even more information such as the proportion of male to female workers, average age, what items are produced at the facility, languages spoken, and the address. Thus consumers concerned about the social sustainability of the clothes they buy can take a closer look at supply chain of Patagonia. In addition, it could force other companies to also divulge information about their supply chains. Untitled. From serials to scores to queer cinema, a new book documents movies' most important innovations When a small handful of enthusiasts gathered at the first cinema show at the Grand Cafe in Paris on December 27, 1895, to celebrate early experimental film, they didn't know that over the next century, their fringe fascination would carve its place in history as the "seventh art. " But how, exactly, did that happen?

In 100 Ideas that Changed Film, Oxford Times film reviewer David Parkinson and publisher Laurence King—who brought us 100 Ideas That Changed Graphic Design and the epic Saul Bass monograph—offer a concise and intelligent chronicle of the most influential developments since the dawn of cinema. Idea # 1: MAGIC LANTERNS Images from a set of 24 glass slides based on Sir John Tenniel's original drawings for Alice in Wonderland Idea # 20: SERIALS Betty Hutton relives the glory days of the silent serial in The Perils of Pauline, a 1947 biopic of the legendary chapterplay heroine, Pearl White. Untitled. The social network's users are increasingly located in Latin America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. An Egyptian activist holds up a laptop in Cairo's Tahrir Square shortly after the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak. (Reuters). The story of Facebook's rise began in the U.S., but today it is mostly told elsewhere, with more than 80 percent of users living in foreign countries, and more than half of the company's revenue coming from outside of the U.S.

Much of Facebook's success -- and the high valuation that earned it $16 billion yesterday on its first day of public trading -- comes from its international expansion. Facebook now has higher market penetration -- meaning it is used by more potential members -- in some parts of Latin America and even the Middle East than it does in the U.S. A map showing Facebook market penetration as of early 2011. Facebook's growth in Latin America is much more recent. Untitled. Untitled. "Oh, so you're part of the Boomerang Generation? " - Lady at DMV. The first time someone called me a Boomerang, I didn't really know how to react so I just chuckled & brushed it aside. Boomerangers are defined as "Generation-X aged persons who return home to live with their parents after being unable to find jobs that will provide adequate compensation to support them as well as their parents did. " The definition should probably get modified to add other generations as the trend is increasing with 85% of college graduates moving back with their parents.

When my parents were my age the world population was 4.378 billion, the Sony Walkman made music mobile, climate change was just being noticed & neglected, the obesity rate in the USA was ~15.1% and optimistic songs like "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor & ambitious songs like "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" by Michael Jackson were topping the music charts. 1. Untitled. 18 May 2012Last updated at 08:20 ET Twitter will look different if people take up the Do Not Track privacy option Micro-blogging service Twitter has declared its support for an initiative that lets people browse the web without being monitored. The "Do Not Track" initiative stops firms tracking people as they visit several different websites. The monitoring is done to help advertisers craft ads to a user's preferences and lifestyle.

Blocking the tracking depends on websites honouring requests from users to browse anonymously. Do Not Track (DNT) has been brokered by the US Federal Trade Commission which wants people to be able to tell websites to stop gathering and sharing data when they visit. Sites that decide to ignore users' requests to stop tracking them could be subject to FTC action. A DNT option is available in the recent versions of the Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari browsers. Untitled. In a dramatic bit of timing, GM announced it was pulling its $10 million in Facebook advertising mere days before the latter company’s IPO.

The high-profile move drew a line under the already pronounced question mark around Facebook’s real value as a paid advertising platform. While some, including Ford, rushed to make the point that proclaiming Facebook ineffective is simply admitting that you’re doing it wrong, the fact is, there has been little to support the notion that paid advertising on Facebook is tied to real, bottom-line results. What we do know though, is that Facebook has been a transformative creative force in advertising. And the creative story of Facebook hasn’t been told by paid ads. The best campaigns have represented brand spending--but in talent and in development and production, not in Facebook as a media buy. But these projects have been valuable all the same--to the industry and to Facebook--in helping to reorient communications thinking around the consumer.
