Fjord | Fjord Digital Trends 2012. Already covered in press such as GigaOM and .net, Fjord’s 2012 digital trends have some driving themes and contexts which we spotted as we finished compiling the list. Here they are: Devices diverge, services converge Consumers own an expanding ‘families’ of devices, while the era of distributed sensors takes off. As a result, services become interlinked and fused, and the smartphone replaces the computer as the digital hub.

Everything is consumerised The smartphone is a mobile computer, and the tablet takes us into the post-PC world. Living in the ‘new now’ Information and communication flows freely, at all times and through all interfaces. The triumph of end-to-end experiences One-way mass marketing is being replaced by word of mouth recommendations so service providers are required to offer compelling ‘total packages’ to an increasingly savvy audience. Fjord | Fjord Kitchen London: The Value of Design. It was a busy event with 35 guests and speakers from ITV, Orange and of course, representatives from our team in London. Andrew McGrath, Director of Design Vision, Guidelines and Mobile experience at Orange, gave an interesting perspective on design challenges, asking if organisational politics were one of the biggest hurdles? He spoke about the importance of establishing a design vision and guidelines to help communicate the value of effective design. He also explained why we had to communicate these principals through every facet of the business – from people to processes – and talked about how we could view the organization as a design parameter.

Next up was Alberto Barreiro, Head of Experience at ITV.com, who shared ITV’s take on communicating the value of design. He talked about the “product being the experience” and that these experiences must be meaningful if we’re to have any connection with them.
