An Annotated Charlie Chaplin Filmography — 82 Films with Links to Videos. Butler of Orbs: THE MASTER (2012) "The only performance that truly makes it is the one that achieves madness" - Turner (Mick Jagger) - PERFORMANCE) What was true in 1968 in Donald Cammell and Nicolas Roeg's countercultural mindfuck classic is still true in 2012's impression of 1950 in Paul Thomas Anderson's THE MASTER.
Blocked rocker Turner (Jagger) says the above quote to a working class brute named Chaz (James Fox), who's been sleeping in Turner's basement, on false claims of knowing the previous tenant. Turner wants to kick him out, but isn't sure quite how -- the other half is drawn to the danger he feels emanating from him, for Chaz does performance too via intimidation, beatings, vandalism and destruction for his boss, Harry Flowers. Turner just makes music but if you can't see the element of violence in the Rolling Stones then you never saw GIMME SHELTER. Eventually the psyches of the two men merge like Alma and Elisabeth Vogler in Bergman's PERSONA (1966).
Paul Thomas Anderson Blogathon: Erich Kuersten on Paul Thomas Anderson. ***Hailed by no less than Kim Morgan as one of her top-five favorite bloggers, Erich Kuersten is one of the most talented and creative writers on film working in the world today.
His blog Acidemic is unbelievably entertaining and informative and Erich always manages to bring a really fresh viewpoint to whatever film related issue he is writing on. Erich has a few great P.T.A. pieces over at Acidemic but I am especially fond of this one, that he is letting me reprint, that discusses Anderson as an auteur (written in the general style of Andrew Sarris' original auteur canon, American Cinema). After reading this please take a look at Erich's thoughts on There Will be Blood, Punch-Drunk Love, as well as this one on There Will be Blood.
