The REAL ID Act is a federal law passed in 2005 that established minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. The law was enacted in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, to improve the integrity and security of state-issued IDs. What Does a REAL ID Look Like? A REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or ID card has a gold star in the top right corner of the card. This star indicates that the ID meets the minimum security standards established by the REAL ID Act. What Does REAL ID Mean for Me? If you plan to fly domestically, access certain federal facilities, or enter nuclear power plants, you will need a REAL ID-compliant ID card. Beginning October 1, 2023, all individuals over 18 will need a REAL ID or an alternative form of identification accepted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to board a domestic flight.
