The New York State Auditor's Office noted an increase in complaints filed against the New York State Game Commission and its regulators. This has been the case since it took over the regulator's handling of an internal investigation two years ago. Some of the complaints relate to the Commission's activities.
Inspector General Lucy Lang believes the surge in complaints related to the committee coincides with decisions by the legislature and the governor to change the way the allegations are investigated. This changed in June 2021 when the Commission's auditor was removed from the office and merged with the state auditor's office.
Many of the complaints received are not about problematic behavior within the KCC, but about traditional KCC regulations such as customer service disputes. According to a recent report by the auditor's office, some of the new complaints are related to state officials.
As the auditor's office actively collected mobile sports betting complaints, the auditor's office informed employees of the options for external complaints, and in the past, it was converted to an independent state auditor's office for transparency and independence.
It is also worth mentioning that the Commission has switched to external supervision to address concerns about transparency. During this Commissioner's tenure, an investigation into employee misconduct was conducted internally and shared with the Commission to respond. This committee raised the question of independence and transparency. Regulators' recommendations have supported this transition over the years.
Since independence, the auditor's office has expanded its investigation and transparency, handled many complaints related to sports committee operators, and has been involved in cases related to the committee's practices and ethics.
The Commission also rejected a request from respondents to change the Daily Fantasy Sports Rules to allow them to choose a 'IM' type of player game in early August 2023, and raised the gambling regulator's claim in an August 2, 2023 registration update that proposal-like daily fantasy sports competitions are essentially sports betting.
Recently, the Commission also released a monthly report on the nation's mobile sports betting market in July 2023, which usually saw its steering wheel shrink for a month in a row, following a lackluster performance on the betting scale.
